L-dopa medication could be helpful in the treatment of phobias and post-traumatic stress disorder
Posted: Published on July 9th, 2014
09.07.2014 - (idw) Johannes Gutenberg-Universitt Mainz Scientists at Mainz and Innsbruck explore new treatment approach to overcome fear A drug used to treat Parkinson's disease could also help people with phobias or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Scientists of the Translational Neurosciences (FTN) Research Center at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) are currently exploring the effects of psychotherapy to extinguish fears in combination with L-dopa. This drug does not only help movement disorders, but might also be used to override negative memories. Professor Raffael Kalisch, head of the Neuroimaging Center (NIC) of the JGU Translational Neurosciences Research Center, and his collaborators at the University of Innsbruck are conducting research in mice and in humans into the psychological and neurobiological mechanisms of anxiety and fear. "Fear reactions are essential to health and survival, but the memories of angst-inducing situations may cause long-term anxiety or phobias," explained Kalisch. In psychotherapy, the 'fear extinction' method is used in exposing people to a threat but without the adverse consequences. Latest research has proven that extinguishing fear also predicts mental health after trauma, suggesting extinction may be an important resilience mechanism. Fear extinction involves a person being presented with a neutral stimulus, such as a circle … Continue reading

Photo: Supplied In a tell-all interview with Sir Michael Parkinson, Ian Thorpe apparently doesnt leave anything out including questions about his sexuality. Channel Ten says Thorpe agreed that nothing should be off-limits for the television interview, which will explore his career successes as well as the hard times the famous swimmer has endured. Parkinson said in a statement from the Ten network that its an interview hes been looking forward to doing for quite some time. Ian Thorpe talks about his private life, including struggles with depression. Photo: Supplied Ian Thorpe has always been near the top of my list to interview. The reasons are obvious. Not many athletes can claim to be the best of all time. Ian can, says the renowned British journalist. Advertisement Parkinson says Thorpes story of success and struggle is a very interesting one. What fascinates me most about Ian is that, apart from the very beginning of his career, he never seemed to enjoy and celebrate his success. The story of a boy who was a teenage world champion, conquered the world and then seemed to give it all away is a fascinating and … Continue reading

Caroline Aherne Breaks Silence On Cancer Treatment, To Pay Tribute To Macmillan Nurse's Support
Posted: Published on June 27th, 2014
Caroline Aherne has broken her silence on her cancer treatment, to pay tribute to the support of her Macmillan nurse. "She hates it when I mention her name, but she's Julie Watts," Caroline told a packed crowd at a charity event. "When I was little, my mum told us that only special people get cancer," she said. "Well, I must be very special." But it was an upbeat speech she gave, full of humour and gratitude for the support she's had in this, her third brush with the disease. "Fifty years ago when my mum found out that we had cancer they didnt have any Macmillan nurses, you were kind of on your own with it, so its a blessing we have got them now," she said. "When you hear them [doctors] telling you you have cancer, its true that you really dont take it in properly, you just dont think of the questions. "And then when you come out, because shes been in there with you, she answers all your questions that you havent been able to ask at the time or havent thought of." Caroline was speaking at a charity event in Manchester, hosted by TV and radio … Continue reading

Deep brain stimulation improves non motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease
Posted: Published on June 25th, 2014
PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 25-Jun-2014 Contact: Daphne Watrin d.watrin@iospress.nl 31-206-883-355 IOS Press Amsterdam, NL, 25 June 2014 Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has become a well-recognized non-pharmacologic treatment that improves motor symptoms of patients with early and advanced Parkinson's disease. Evidence now indicates that DBS can decrease the number and severity of non motor symptoms of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) as well, according to a review published in the Journal of Parkinson's Disease. "Non motor features are common in PD patients, occur across all disease stages, and while well described, are still under-recognized when considering their huge impact on patients' quality of life," says Lisa Klingelhoefer, MD, a fellow at the National Parkinson Foundation International Centre of Excellence, Department of Neurology, King's College Hospital and King's College, London. For example, DBS of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is effective for alleviating sleep problems and fatigue associated with PD, producing noticeable long-term improvements in sleep efficiency and the quality and duration of continuous sleep. DBS also decreases nighttime and early morning dystonia and improves nighttime mobility. "DBS can contribute to better sleep, less daytime somnolence, improved mobility, and less need for dopamine replacement therapy," says Dr. Klingelhoefer. The effects of DBS on some … Continue reading

Lindsey Olivere: Student Seeks Alternative Pathway for Parkinson's Treatment
Posted: Published on June 19th, 2014
Durham, NC - Senior Lindsey Olivere is trying to synthesize novel compounds that may enhance Parkinson's treatments. The chemistry major and literature minor from Wilmington, Del., is conducting her research as part of a Chemistry Summer Research Fellowship and plans on continuing her work as part of a senior thesis. Olivere, who is working with chemistry and biochemistry professor Dewey McCafferty, is researching the mechanism of action and target site of cyclopropylamine substrates -- compounds that have anti-Parkinsonian effects. "Our ultimate goal right now is to make eight grams of this final product to send off to our collaborators to be tested in rats for the anti-Parkinsonian effects," she said. "We believe it's a dopamine independent pathway, which is really exciting because right now Parkinson's treatments are focused on dopamine pathways." Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by a loss of motor function. The disease symptoms are the result of the death of dopamine-producing cells. Olivere said by the time most patients start showing symptoms, 60 to 70 percent of their dopamine stores have been depleted. Thus, many treatments focus on restoring dopamine levels in the body, and few studies have looked at alternative mechanisms. Currently, Olivere is working … Continue reading
