Tennessee pharmacy recalls steroid injections

Posted: Published on May 25th, 2013

A Tennessee compounding pharmacy on probation has voluntarily recalled an anti-inflammatory steroid injection in at least 11 states after seven patients developed abscesses in North Carolina and Illinois, officials said Friday. State and federal health organizations are investigating Main Street Family Pharmacy, LLC, in Newbern, Tennessee, and its preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate, or MPA, a steroid product used for a range of conditions. The pharmacy "is currently on probation as a result of a recent inspection," the Tennessee Department of Health said in a statement. The agency didn't provide further details. The Tennessee Board of Pharmacy licensed the compounding pharmacy in 1985, the state health agency said. It was licensed as a manufacturer/wholesaler/distributor in 2010, the state agency said. Officials with the compounding pharmacy couldn't be immediately reached for comment Friday. Cooperating with authorities, the pharmacy has voluntarily recalled all of its sterile products, including MPA, authorities said. No cases of meningitis or other life-threatening infections have been reported, authorities said. "Health officials believe, in reviewing preliminary information about when the material could have been appropriately used, there is not an ongoing risk to those now needing treatments," the Tennessee health agency said. Newbern Pharmacy Investigated for Potentially Contaminated Medications

Posted: Published on May 25th, 2013

Story Created: May 24, 2013 at 10:37 PM CDT Story Updated: May 24, 2013 at 11:08 PM CDT The FDA said after last years deadly meningitis outbreak, they have been cracking down on pharmacies, especially compound pharmacies like the West Main Street Family Pharmacy. Compound pharmacies make custom medications at doctor's requests. Kathy Sisk said after she heard the news she felt hesitant coming into the pharmacy. "I've heard all about the outbreak that they had. It kinda shocked me cause I didn't know it was right here in this little small town," she said. The potentially contaminated injections contain methylprednisolene acetate. MPA is the same drug responsible for last years fungal meningitis outbreak that claimed the lives of 55 people and sent another 740 to the hospital. Dorman Beard lives in Dyer County and said he does not want anyone else hurt. "If it's that serious which apparently it is, they should probably shut this store down," he said. The Main Street Family Pharmacy said it is 'fully supportive and compliant with the FDA's current investigation'. They said 'in the pharmacy's 17 years of operation, patient safety has always been and will always be Main Street Family Pharmacy's top … Continue reading

FDA: 7 infections linked to Tenn. compounding pharmacy

Posted: Published on May 25th, 2013

WASHINGTONFederal health officials are investigating reports of complications caused by possibly contaminated medications made by a Tennessee specialty pharmacy. The Food and Drug Administration said Friday that the investigation involves seven reports from patients who received steroid injections from Main Street Family Pharmacy, a compounding pharmacy in Newbern, Tenn. Play Video The injections contain methylprednisolone acetate, the same drug at the center of last year's deadly outbreak of fungal meningitis. More than 55 people have died and over 740 others have been sickened after receiving contaminated injections from a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy, the New England Compounding Center. The steroids are usually used to treat pain and reduce inflammation. The FDA said in a statement at least one of the seven cases appears to be a fungal infection. The government recommends doctors stop using any sterile drugs distributed by the pharmacy and quarantine them until further notice. To date, there have been no reports of meningitis or life-threatening infections, the State of Tennessee Department of Health said in a press release. The department added the patients were in Illinois and North Carolina, and received the injections after Dec. 6, 2012. Health care facilities in at least 13 states received the products … Continue reading

FDA warns of infections tied to Tenn. pharmacy

Posted: Published on May 25th, 2013

By Maggie Fox, Senior Writer, NBC News Health officials fear they have another outbreak of infections linked to pain injections -- this one because at least seven people in two states developed abscesses after getting injections of steroid drugs. They're all linked to a single pharmacy: Main Street Family Pharmacy, a compounding pharmacy in Newbern, Tenn. Tennessee state officials say the facility distributed the products to 13 states: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Kentucky, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. "Fortunately, we are aware of no serious events like meningitis, stroke or death in association with this cluster, but still our hearts go out to those affected by this event," Tennessee state health commissioner Dr. John Dreyzehner told reporters in a telephone briefing. "Out of an abundance of caution, the FDA recommends that health care providers not administer any products labeled as sterile from Main Street and quarantine them until further guidance is provided," the Food and Drug Administration said in a statement. "The reports of adverse events are all from patients who received preservative free methylprednisolone acetate (80 mg/mL) by injection. To date, the FDA has received seven reports," it added. "Complications identified thus … Continue reading
