The Oregon Board of Pharmacy is gathering information about a major generic drugmaker in preparation for a possible broader investigation of quality concerns after Ranbaxy Pharmaceutical pled guilty to seven counts of fraud in federal court. Ranbaxy products such as generic Lipitor have been on Oregon pharmacy shelves, and pharmacy board members are concerned over whether enough has been done to protect consumers, said the pharmacy board's executive director, Gary Schnabel. The board will discuss the company at its June 11-12 meeting in Portland. State regulators learned of the case from a Fortune Magazine article, not from the Food and Drug Administration, he added. The FDA had been warned of problems with the India-based firm years ago, including the submission of bogus quality data, but continued to grant profitable new drug rights to the company until Congress ramped up pressure on the agency, according to the Fortune article.
