Posted: Published on September 28th, 2012

Citing a tiny Key West pharmacy as the top whistleblower in the country, a national study released Tuesday showed that whistleblowers are gaining billions of dollars for state and federal governments by exposing fraudulent practices in the pharmaceutical industry. The study from Public Citizen, a Washington consumer watchdog group, reported that that so far in 2012, whistleblowers have sparked $6.6 billion in penalties to be assessed against drug manufacturers, primarily for fraudulently charging high prices in the Medicaid program. The Public Citizen report, which covered whistleblower settlements of more than $1 million in the period from Nov. 2, 2010, through July 18, 2012, reported almost half of the actions came from Ven-A-Care, a Key West pharmacy owned by four men. The study cited a CNBC report that Ven-A-Cares revelations had brought more than $1.3 billion to the federal government since 2001. Another report, from the National Law Journal in 2011, estimated that the pharmacy had helped both state and federal governments recover more than $2.5 billion. The Law Journal estimated that the pharmacy owners and their lawyer received $340 million from the settlements as reward for blowing the whistle. Pharmacy mix-up nearly kills boy

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2012

Eyewitness News BRONX (WABC) -- Christina Torres hopes no other pharmacy has the sort of mix-up that nearly cost her 7-year-old son Adrien his life. "As a parent, the feeling that I felt at that moment and I continue to feel it, is a feeling that I would not wish on anybody," Christina Torres said. It was back in July. Little Adrien was unconscious after his mother gave him what she thought was his third dose of generic Ritalin, which she got at Felicity Pharmacy in the Bronx. At the hospital, doctors took a closer look at Adrien's medication. The bottle read methylphenidate. The name and one aspect of the pill are very similar to methadone. They each have an "m" in a box on the pill, but one is for children. The other is synthetic heroin. "The doctor comes back in the room and tells me, 'ma'am, we're sorry to tell you, but your son is overdosing on methadone," Torres said. Late today, the pharmacist at Felicity admitted it was an incredibly horrible mistake. "I agree and I admit, it's a human error," the pharmacist said. Sadly, because of the similarities between these pills, it's not the first time … Continue reading

Advent Makes $1 Billion Bid for Dutch Pharmacy Chain Mediq

Posted: Published on September 24th, 2012

By Maud van Gaal and Anne-Sylvaine Chassany - 2012-09-24T14:10:11Z Advent International Corp. will offer to buy Dutch pharmacy chain Mediq NV (MEDIQ) for 775 million euros ($1 billion) in cash as it seeks to expand in the health-care distribution industry. The Boston-based leveraged buyout fund plans to make a bid of 13.25 euros a share, 53 percent more than Mediqs closing price on Sept. 21, the companies said in a statement today. Advent will pay for the takeover with debt and equity. Mediq shares rose as much as 52 percent in Amsterdam trading. Mediq, founded in 1899 and based in Utrecht, owns 226 pharmacies in the Netherlands. It sells drugs, medical devices and related care services in 15 countries including Poland, the U.S., Germany and Sweden. Private ownership will enable Mediq to make acquisitions to expand globally, and provide easier access to financing, the company said. It makes sense for Mediq to operate in a private setting, Richard Withagen, an Amsterdam-based analyst at SNS Securities, said in a note. At the current offer, we believe Advent would obtain the direct and institutional business at an attractive price, without paying anything for the pharmacy operations. Mediq rose 49 percent to 12.87 … Continue reading
