Magellan Launches Total Drug SolutionsSM Offering Complete Drug Management

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2012

AVON, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Magellan Pharmacy Solutions, a subsidiary of Magellan Health Services Inc. (MGLN), announced today the launch of Total Drug SolutionsSM, a revolutionary integrated approach to managing all drugs oral, injectable and infusible to improve the quality and safety of care while lowering costs for consumers and health plans. Historically, patients have received standard medications and specialty drugs in a disconnected and uncoordinated fashion. This lack of integration presents safety risks, decreases therapeutic effectiveness and unnecessarily increases costs, said Tina Blasi, president of Magellan Pharmacy Solutions. Payers have managed traditional pharmaceutical costs to a flat trend. However, specialty drug spending has increased dramatically. With recent advances in pharmaceutical technology, patients and payers need better support to coordinate treatment, manage costs and ensure patients achieve the best outcomes. Total Drug Solutions combines our strengths in both specialty and medical drug management with our experience in traditional pharmacy benefit solutions to provide a patient-centric, 360-degree approach to drug management. Our philosophy is to help patients receive the right drug in the right amount at the right place. Magellan has launched a new website, http://www.TotalDrugSolutions.com, where health plans, employers and government agencies can learn more about the Total Drug Solutions suite of … Continue reading

Riverdale pharmacy first in Maryland to offer free HIV testing

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2012

Published on: Tuesday, September 11, 2012 By Amber Larkins East Pines Pharmacy in Riverdale became the first pharmacy in Maryland to offer free HIV testing in July. We offer it on Saturdays in conjunction with the (Prince Georges County) Health Department, said Sid Stewart, marketing consultant for East Pines Pharmacy. Maryland has the fourth highest rate of HIV and AIDS in the country, and Prince Georges County has the second highest rate of HIV and AIDS in the state, according to statistics from the Prince Georges County Department of Health. A Health Department official is at East Pines Pharmacy for about four hours each Saturday and usually tests seven people. However, this week, pharmacist Omatayo Awotunde, and his wife, Vivian Awotunde, a registered nurse, are receiving HIV level one training. This training will enable them to administer the tests without the aid of Health Department workers. By mid-September, the HIV testing service will be offered whenever the pharmacy is open, Stewart said. The test is an oral sure rapid. We swab both the lower and upper gum, sideways and upside down, Awotunde said. Read the original here: Riverdale pharmacy first in Maryland to offer free HIV testing … Continue reading

William Riffee, 68, announced Tuesday that he will be stepping down as pharmacy dean in June 2013. He said he initially planned to leave in a few years but said UFs senior vice president for health affairs, Dr. David Guzick, wanted his own leadership team in place sooner. It was just a matter of timing, and his timing was a little bit different from mine, Riffee said. UFs Health Science Center comprises six colleges, half of which will be seeking new deans by next year. The deans of the colleges of nursing and veterinary medicine both announced in the past few months that theyll be leaving in 2013. UF President Bernie Machen, who himself is retiring next year, noted that both Riffee and nursing dean Kathleen Long had been around for more than 16 years. Its typical for an institution of UFs size to have turnover in several dean positions in any given … Continue reading

Posted: Published on September 11th, 2012

Jon Haywood The School of Pharmacy kicked off its first of many Brown Bag Discussions on Sept. 5 in the Thad Cochran Research Center. Nearly 30 talented research scientists and faculty members from both the Jackson and Oxford campuses came together to discuss how to improve, synergize and streamline their areas of research. Our aim is to take four targeted research areas and organize a Brown Bag series around each one of those (in order to) make other investigators and faculty members aware of the strengths that we have, said Dr. Larry Walker, leader of the first Brown Bag discussion and the director of the National Center of Natural Products Research. The four areas that these discussions will target are cancer, cardiometabolic disorders, neuroscience/drugs of abuse and infectious diseases. The Brown Bag series will greatly benefit the Universitys faculty, staff and research scientists. (The discussions) will facilitate the development of new collaborations. It will help scientists gain a better understanding of what their colleagues are doing, stated Dr. Steven Cutler, director of the Center of Research Excellence in Natural Products Neuroscience and another facilitator of the discussions. This series will not only serve faculty, but the students as well. Our … Continue reading

Two thieves were caught on camera during a smash and grab burglary at a Walgreens Pharmacy in Brenham. It happened just before 2:30 Friday morning, and police say the suspects got away with a trash bag full of prescription pain pills. It took several attempts but after three minutes -- not one, but two crooks successfully shattered their window of opportunity. On Friday at approximately 2:26 a.m., surveillance footage from a Walgreen's in Brenham captures two African American men climbing through the pharmacy drive-thru window. The suspects were in and out in approximately 42 seconds. Brenham Police Corporal and Public Information Officer Chris Jackson tells News 3, It would appear they [suspects] knew where they were going and what they were doing." You can see the first suspect crawling through the broken window; once on the ground he darts straight to the second aisle. He then turns around and runs back to the window to grab a black trash bag from his accomplice. The suspect runs back to the aisle, and according to police, steals 18 bottles of hydrocodone. The two then take off before police arrive on scene. While Brenham Police say it's the first time this pharmacy has … Continue reading

People's Pharmacy: Testosterone not right for woman's low libido

Posted: Published on September 9th, 2012

Q: At age 29, I had to have a hysterectomy that included my ovaries. After the fat-stored estrogen left my body (producing horrid hot flashes), I complained to my OB-GYN about my missing libido. He wrote me a prescription for an estrogen and testosterone mix. I began taking the pills, but I had strange changes in my body. I developed acne, facial hair, body hair and a low voice. I even began to walk differently. It helped some with sex drive, but I felt less and less feminine and more masculine. I hated it. I don't think testosterone is worth the worry, even for women without ovaries. A: You experienced predictable side effects of testosterone. The Food and Drug Administration has not approved testosterone to lift libido in women. If physicians prescribe this male hormone off label for women, they should use the lowest dose that works to boost sex drive without producing masculine characteristics. This requires careful follow-up. In your case, that doesn't appear to have happened. Q: I have been a type 1 diabetic for 66 years. Because diabetes can lead to kidney problems, my doctor prescribed a blood-pressure drug that helps protect the kidneys. I had no … Continue reading

Pharmacy Find of the Week: The Use Everywhere on Everything Balm

Posted: Published on September 6th, 2012

Pharmacy Find of the Week: The Use Everywhere on Everything Balm It had me at those two words everything balm. I love a rescue product, and I recently discovered Swisspers Naturals Aloe Everything Balm ($10.99) when I was browsing the aisles of Priceline. It's been a staple in my handbag ever since. Up there with the paw paw creams and rose hips of the beauty world, aloe vera is soothing, moisturising and has super duper healing qualities. Some people (like me) even insist on maintaining their very own aloe vera plant at home. If I'm suffering from sunburn (naughty) or an area of my skin just needs some good old TLC, I cut off a stem and squeeze out the gel sitting inside. So good! But for something more portable, the Swisspers balm is perfect. You can use it as a moisturiser, a lip balm, on your cuticles, on cracked heels, cuts and grazes, and, wait for it I even use a tiny bit on a spool brush to sculpt my brows. Whiz, bang, wow.
