HUNTINGTON -- Eighty students began their academic march toward becoming pharmacists Sunday during the Marshall University School of Pharmacy's inaugural White Coat Ceremony at the Memorial Student Center. The ceremony capped off three years of the university preparing for the new doctoral pharmacy program and is the latest chapter in the Tri-State's growth as a medical center. For the students who comprise the inaugural class, it serves as an opportunity to set high standards for students who will follow their footsteps and help the school on its path to accreditation. "You are fulfilling a responsibility beyond that of normal students," Marshall President Stephen Kopp said during the ceremony. "You will begin to define the culture and character of the school by your performance." The School of Pharmacy got the green light to start teaching classes this fall when it was granted pre-candidate accreditation status by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education in June. Pre-candidate accreditation for the doctoral program extends through June 30, 2013. Another comprehensive on-site evaluation will take place during the upcoming school year. The accreditation process consists of three steps, culminating with graduation of the first class in 2016 and adherence to all ACPE standards. The School … Continue reading

Osco pharmacy will close Monday
Posted: Published on August 13th, 2012
MICHIGAN CITY - The Osco pharmacy is scheduled to close Monday, just days after the Jewel-Osco corporate announcement that the Franklin Street store will close Oct. 8. "We are letting our customers know that the pharmacy is closing Aug. 13, so they have time to make other arrangements," said Karen May, director of external communications for the supermarket chain. On Thursday, company representatives told employees that the Jewel-Osco store will close. The announcement took employees, customers and city officials by surprise. Jewel-Osco does not own the building. May said the decision to close was a "business decision," and no decision has been made about the future of the property. Jewel-Osco has four other locations in Northwest Indiana, including ones in Dyer, Crown Point, Munster and Chesterton. How did $14 million in drugs vanish from a UM pharmacy?
Posted: Published on August 7th, 2012
Olga Hutnik, a pharmacy buyer at the University of Miami, noticed something odd in May 2011 when she looked at the results of a new program to track drugs in the UM medical system: Hundreds of syringes of an expensive cancer drug were apparently missing. The new software was not the most trustworthy, Hutnik later told investigators, so she decided to hand-count the syringes of Neulasta, a medication used to boost white blood cells to reduce the risk of infection at a cost of about $2,600 per dose. That decision, court records say, led eventually to the arrest of a UM employee and a stunning discovery that $14 million in prescription drugs had gone missing over a three-year period from UMs Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Pharmacy technician Manuel Gerardo Pacheco who seemed to be living beyond his means, investigators said later was charged with four counts of grand theft, two counts of trafficking in contraband prescription drugs and one count of dealing in stolen property. He has pleaded not guilty. Obviously, somebody let the ball slip, said Randy Kroner, a Miami forensic accountant. He said most large organizations have internal auditors that make sure the proper controls are followed counting … Continue reading
