People's Pharmacy: Relief for bra itch

Posted: Published on July 15th, 2012

Q: I have been suffering with a rash under my breasts. Every morning, I use antiperspirant under my breasts. Although it does seem to help, the itching and discomfort have never gone away. Underwire bras are iffy, and lace is out of the question. I itch like crazy, and I have red marks, so at the end of the day I can't wait to get my bra off. What can you recommend? A: We don't know what is causing your itchy rash, but many women develop a fungal infection in those warm, moist areas under the breasts. Keeping the area dry can be crucial. Although an antiperspirant may reduce sweating, another reader has a different suggestion: "I had bra itch for months and was unsuccessful in treating it until I tried Zeasorb-AF. I can't believe the difference. In just over a week, it has dried up the rash and stopped the itching. It takes some getting used to the medicinal aroma. They market it for athlete's foot, and it has an antifungal drug called miconazole in it. It's worth a try!" We hope the Zeasorb-AF will help you, too. Another approach that may be worthwhile would be a spray-on athlete's … Continue reading

QU College of Pharmacy Gets Canadian Recognition

Posted: Published on July 15th, 2012

DOHA, Qatar--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Qatar Universitys undergraduate pharmacy degree programme has been officially recognised by the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada (PEBC), highlighting the programmes growing international reputation. The course was previously accredited by the Canadian Council of Pharmacy Programs - CCAPP (Canada) - in 2009. The move by PEBC recognises that QUs four-year BSc (Pharm) degree programme meets the stringent standards of CCAPP (Canada). In practice, this means that QU graduates will be permitted direct entry to the PEBC Pharmacist Qualifying Examination, which is typically reserved for pharmacy graduates in Canada and the USA only. The pharmacy programme at QU is the first international course to be awarded accreditation status by the CCAPP (Canada). The PEBC has also agreed to the delivery of the PEBC Pharmacist Qualifying Examination (Part 1) on a pilot basis on Qatar soil. This is expected to take place this November, allowing QU students to sit the exam in Doha rather than having to fly to Canada. This is the first time this examination will be delivered outside of North America. Dr Peter Jewesson, past-Dean of the College of Pharmacy at QU, heralded the recognition. He said: This is a very important milestone for our new … Continue reading

Minister confident in pharmacy deal

Posted: Published on July 14th, 2012

If safety concerns about the new pharmacy contract were valid, it would not have gone ahead, Health Minister Tony Ryall says. This week, Mosgiel pharmacist Jenny Kerr-Mackenzie revealed fears the new funding model pushed pharmacists towards revenue-gathering activities. This would compel some to rush dispensing tasks, for which they would be paid a $1 handling fee instead of $5.30 an item. This risked patient safety through increased dispensing errors, she said. Asked earlier this week if pharmacists had approached him with specific safety concerns, Mr Ryall's office said, by email, that 85% of pharmacists had signed the new contract. "This shows there is a general agreement across the pharmacy sector of the need to move from the current medicine-focused model to a patient-focused model. We urge pharmacies who haven't yet signed to engage constructively with their local district health board to have their concerns addressed. "This agreement would not have proceeded if there were valid concerns that patient safety would be compromised." Pressed on whether pharmacists had specifically mentioned dispensing safety, a spokeswoman said by email: "The minister has received some letters and emails about the new community pharmacy agreement. Many have generally been in favour of the new agreement, … Continue reading

Customers grieve death of Norfolk pharmacy worker

Posted: Published on July 13th, 2012

By Patrick Wilson The Virginian-Pilot July 13, 2012 NORFOLK About half the customers at Atrium Pharmacy know Tom Florence is gone. The others find out in the store. Florence, 48, worked at the pharmacy, next to Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center, as a technician for 18 years. He died Saturday after he was hit by a van on his street, Cape View Avenue, in the Bayview neighborhood. A garbage truck was idling in the road while Florence chatted with one of the trash collectors. He then stepped into the van's path, police said. The driver of the van, who was going around the garbage truck, didn't see him. Florence was thrown 37 feet, according to court records. Florence was like a younger brother to Jay Levine, the manager of the pharmacy. "He was unique," Levine said. Florence liked to make an offer to nearly everyone, Levine said: "What can I do for you?" He seemed to gain inner strength from helping others, never looking for personal benefit. Angela Shalhoup, a longtime customer, said she loved Florence's funny, calm demeanor. Pharmacy shootout injures customer

Posted: Published on July 11th, 2012

By The Record July 11, 2012 12:00 AM STOCKTON - A woman is recovering from a bullet wound after a gunbattle broke out at a southeast Stockton pharmacy Tuesday morning. The victim's leg injury was not life-threatening and was suffered after four people entered a pharmacy in the 2000 block of East Mariposa Road about 10:45 a.m. with guns drawn, said Officer Joe Silva, a spokesman for the Stockton Police Department. One assailant fired his weapon after a pharmacy employee fired a shot, Silva said. It's unclear whose bullet struck the victim, he said. A car with four men matching the assailants' descriptions was spotted by officers who were arriving on scene, Silva said. They pulled over at Interstate 5 and Monte Diablo Road and surrendered without incident, Silva said. Arrested on suspicion of robbery were Troy Buzo, 18; Nick Buzo, 20; Elijah Nevarez, 19; and Kevin Ayala, 20. It was unclear Tuesday whether the Buzos are related. The findings will be turned over to the District Attorney's Office, and Silva didn't rule out the possibility that the clerk, too, could face charges if it is determined he negligently discharged his firearm. Pharmacy staff respond to a challenge

Pharmacy staff respond to a challenge It was the sort of challenge pharmacy staff take in their stride but three months on from the opening of the new cytotoxic compounding unit at Waikato Hospital, Dr John Barnard and Jan Goddard realise what an outstanding job staff did in such a short timeframe. Dr Barnard, is clinical director of pharmacy and a consultant anaesthetist and Ms Goddard the pharmacy manager at Waikato District Health Board. With the current contract ending on 29 October last year, Baxter Healthcare gave notice of withdrawal of their on-site compounding service from the hospital. The Auckland company had for more than 10 years compounded the cytotoxic medicines on site from base ingredients for the treatment of cancer. For the pharmacy to take co-ordination of the service from Waikato over and have it running smoothly from day one was always going to be a big ask, said Ms Goddard. We have a completely new process, new prescribing timeframes and changed patient flow. This has seen a huge change to process for pharmacy, nursing and medical staff, she said. Everything has gone so smoothly given the flow of work through this unit and the dedication that everyone has … Continue reading
