80% sign pharmacy service contract

Posted: Published on July 6th, 2012

Carole Heatly Ms Heatly, addressing this week's board meeting in Dunedin, said the DHB was aiming for 100% of pharmacists signed by the deadline of July 23. She said the new agreement, which took effect this month, was problematic for rural pharmacies, because of the change in funding model. The new national pharmacy contract has shifted from a simple payment-for-dispensing model, to one based on patient management. Ms Heatly said there was flexibility to increase payments for rural pharmacies, to ensure they were viable. Board member Neville Cook said he believed Te Anau was at risk of losing its only pharmacy because of a refusal to sign the contract. However, when contacted by the Otago Daily Times, Fiordland Community Pharmacy owner George Batchelor said he planned to sign, "under duress". He had a duty to provide the service to his community, but was not happy about the situation. The DHB had not put sufficient resources into the negotiating process, with "one poor lady" seeming to be the only point of contact. However, at yesterday's meeting, Ms Heatly advised board members the DHB was "bending over backwards" to successfully negotiate contracts and deal with pharmacists' concerns. The DHB was "spending lots … Continue reading

CHC pharmacy closed on weekends

Posted: Published on July 5th, 2012

Friday, July 06, 2012 DUE TO LACK OF PHARMACIST The Commonwealth Health Center's pharmacy, one of the key areas of the public hospital, was ordered closed during weekends due to the lack of staff. Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. CEO Juan N. Babauta confirmed with Saipan Tribune yesterday that CHC pharmacy will be closed during Saturdays and Sundays until the organization fills the vacancy for a pharmacist. The closure of the hospital pharmacy started last week when in-patient pharmacist Anthony Raho went on terminal leave. Raho, who is also an elected board member of the corporation board, quit his job to join the private sector effective yesterday, July 5. Babauta said that CHC has only one pharmacist left since Raho's departure. He said the decision to temporarily close the pharmacy is to avoid the lone pharmacist from being burned out. Until a replacement for Raho is found, the weekend closure will stand. Babauta said. He, however, assured that the pharmacy will be open during weekdays. According to Babauta, the corporation is now working on the details on how a locum pharmacist can come in quickly. We're currently working on that now. In fact, we're starting to process one locum pharmacist, he told … Continue reading

People's Pharmacy: Medical flip-flops frustrate consumers

Posted: Published on July 2nd, 2012

Q: I am fed up with all the conflicting advice about how to stay healthy. One day vitamin D is great; the next, experts say it doesn't work for bones. I have also seen flip-flops about eggs, salt, calcium, fluoride and hormone replacement therapy. A: We understand your frustration. Americans have been told for decades to cut back on eggs even though recent research shows they do not raise cholesterol. There is a raging controversy about the wisdom of widespread salt restriction (American Journal of Hypertension, January 2012). Risks associated with calcium supplements (Heart, June 2012) and hormone replacement therapy (Annals of Internal Medicine online, May 28, 2012) just add to the confusion. You can't go wrong with Grandma's wisdom: exercise, vegetables and a good night's sleep. Q: I used to have ingrown toenails. I had them removed by surgery (not the whole nail). Now my nails have a really bad fungal infection. What can I do? A: Trauma can sometimes trigger fungal infections in the nails. Prescription pills to treat nail fungus can have serious side effects, including liver damage. There are a number of home remedies that you might try first, but you'll need to be patient. It … Continue reading

Downtown Pharmacy in St. John's gets new licence, reopens

Posted: Published on July 1st, 2012

St. John's pharmacist Paul Gill of Downtown Pharmacy has temporarily lost his licence. CBC (CBC) Downtown Pharmacy in St. John's reopened on Friday after being closed for two months following its licence being revoked. The Pharmacy Board of Newfoundland and Labrador said it cancelled the business licence of Downtown Pharmacy on the west end of Water Street after the pharmacist-in-charge stepped down in May. The closure forced 110 people who rely on the site for methadone to seek help elsewhere. The board issued a new licence to Downtown Pharmacy after the drugstore met a number of conditions, including having a second pharmacist on staff. Don Rowe, the secretary-registrar of the board, said the pharmacy is once again able to dispense methadone, but he doesn't known how many of its previous patients will return. The owner of the building, pharmacist Paul Gill is not allowed to work there. He was disciplined by the board in April for not properly supervising one of his staff, pharmacist Ann Marie Burke.
