Parents sue Gig Harbor pharmacy

Posted: Published on February 6th, 2012

ADAM LYNN; Staff writer • Published February 06, 2012 Modified February 05, 2012 A Pierce County sheriff’s deputy and his wife are suing a Gig Harbor pharmacy, claiming it twice gave their son incorrect dosages of medicine that made him very sick. Darrell Cochran, attorney for Eric and Laura Carlson, filed the lawsuit in Pierce County Superior Court earlier this week. The suit names Olympic Pharmacy and Healthcare Services as the sole defendant. The Carlsons seek unspecified damages. Jeff Bond, owner of Olympic Pharmacy, referred calls to his insurance carrier in Iowa. A representative there declined to comment. The lawsuit contends Olympic Pharmacy is “an imminent public health danger” because it has not instituted procedures to prevent similar problems. “Plaintiffs hope to help prevent future injuries to their friends and neighbors who rely on this pharmacy and to recover fair and just compensation for their injuries,” the suit states. The Carlsons contend Olympic Pharmacy in 2009 and 2011 improperly filled their son’s seizure medication, giving him too much of the medication both times. The first time the pharmacy loaded eight doses of a drug called Lorazepam in a single syringe instead of single doses in eight syringes, the suit states. … Continue reading

People's Pharmacy: Surprising drug for severe depression

Posted: Published on February 5th, 2012

Q: I participated in two clinical trials of ketamine for depression. The infusion was not pleasant, but a few hours later, my depression was mysteriously lifted. It was as though someone carefully cleaned, polished and rejuvenated every cell in my brain. It was not a feeling of being high; it was completely different from anything I had ever experienced in my entire life. Unfortunately, it only lasted a few days. When it went away, the return to life as I had always known it was horrible. They told me upfront that it is a clinical trial and the drug is not available for depression treatment. But it is a Food and Drug Administration-approved medication. Any M.D. could prescribe it, but no one has been willing to administer it. I have felt closer to suicide at times since I found out how good other people feel every day. I hope ketamine will soon be approved for severe depression. A: Major depression like yours is challenging to treat. It can take weeks for current antidepressants to start working. Clinical trials reveal that only about a third of patients achieve good results, even after optimal therapy (American Journal of Psychiatry, November 2006). Ketamine … Continue reading

Jail for Loftus high street pharmacy raider

Posted: Published on February 4th, 2012

A PHARMACY raider was caught red-handed outside the ransacked chemist’s with a bag full of drugs within hours of his jail release. Paul Jefferson, 37, was found and searched at the back of the Lloyds Pharmacy on Loftus high street. He had a bottle of aftershave from the store and a bag of prescription medication which was discarded nearby, Teesside Crown Court heard. Hours earlier he had been released after almost two months remanded in custody. At first he denied being responsible for the burglary but had a change of heart and owned up two days later, said prosecutor Rachel Masters. Jefferson, of Catherine Street, Lingdale, admitted burglary and possessing a small amount of amphetamine, a Class B drug. The offences from November 29 last year put him in breach of a suspended sentence imposed two months earlier for another burglary. His record of 106 offences stretched back to 1990. Julian Gaskin, defending, said Jefferson acted as a lookout while others went into the pharmacy. He said Jefferson had been thrown out by his landlord because the police had been to his lodgings so many times. Jefferson ended up hanging around with the wrong crowd and taking drugs again. He … Continue reading
