FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A well-known Valley family is moving forward with plans to build a much-needed pharmacy college in the Fresno area. But there's debate about where this planned school should be located. A building on Clovis Avenue near Herndon Avenue will host the first classes if and when the for-profit university becomes accredited. But the Assemi family, which is launching this pharmacy college, already has plans for a larger campus. That location will likely be in a place Fresno city officials don't want it. Developers are hopeful California Health Sciences University will create jobs and fill a major need for health care workers. Fresno city council members just approved a resolution to back the campus plans, despite Mayor Ashley Ashley Swearengin's push to bring the university to downtown Fresno. "It's a pretty ambitious plan, but it requires a substantial amount of land and those properties just don't exist in one space here in downtown," said CHSU representative Jeff Roberts. The Assemi family, who also own Granville Homes, plans to build the pharmacy school in Fresno County, near Millerton Lake. CVS Pharmacy has its sights set on building a store in Hastings, along the city's main drag. A concept plan discussed at the city's planning committee last month shows the pharmacy building and a parking lot occupying an entire city block along the east side of Vermillion Street, between 14th and 15th streets. Several homes and businesses, including Hastings Gift Garden & Floral and a Great Clips, currently occupy the site. CVS Pharmacy has met with the land owners to talk about purchasing their properties, City Administrator Melanie Mesko Lee said, adding she was unsure how far along the process has evolved. City officials and CVS Pharmacy have scheduled a neighborhood meeting to talk about the proposal. It will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, at City Hall. The Iowa Pharmacy Board unanimouslyvoted Thursday to deny a request from Bauder Pharmacy to reverse the revocation of its controlled substances license while it appeals the decision. The board filed charges in May 2012 against Pharmacist Mark Graziano and the pharmacy after an audit found 740,888 hydrocodone pain pills were missing. Graziano faced 27 administrative charges and the pharmacy 26 charges. In April, the board ruled for an indefinite suspension of Graziano's pharmacist license as well as immediate suspension of the license of Bauder Pharmacy to dispense controlled substances. Bauder Pharmacy filed a petition for judicial review of the decision in Polk County District Court and filed a petition to stay the revocation and paying of a $25,000 civil penalty. Thursday, the stay was denied by the board. The board said it reached the decision because Bauder Pharmacy is not a secure environment for controlled substances, and it failed to show that it is likely to prevail during the judicial review. The Food and Drug Administration warned doctors and pharmacists Wednesday to avoid drugs made by a Florida specialty pharmacy called The Compounding Shop, due to potential safety problems uncovered by health inspectors. The St. Petersburg, Fla.-based pharmacy has agreed to recall all of its sterile drugs and is in the process of notifying customers, the FDA said in a statement. The agency said health care professionals should quarantine drugs from the company and not administer them to patients. The Compounding Shop is a compounding pharmacy, which means it mixes custom formulations of drugs to meet doctors' specifications. In recent weeks the FDA has cracked down on compounding pharmacies across the country, triggering several national recalls. The wave of inspections comes in the wake of a nationwide fungal meningitis outbreak last year tied to contaminated drugs from a Massachusetts pharmacy. The outbreak sickened more than 700 Americans and killed more than 50 others. The FDA said a recent inspection of The Compounding Shop raised concerns about sterility problems with company drugs that could lead to bacterial contamination.
