Acura Pharma jumps on Nexafed pharmacy deal

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2013

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Acura Pharmaceuticals Inc. surged Tuesday after the company said the Kerr Drug store chain will carry Acura's drug Nexafed, a decongestant that is designed to be difficult to make into methamphetamine. Acura said Nexafed should be on shelves in Kerr's approximately 75 locations in North Carolina. Acura began selling Nexafed in December and said it expected early interest from independent drug stores rather than chains. In morning trading, Acura Pharmaceuticals shares rose $1.14, or 56 percent, to $3.19. Nexafed is a form of the decongestant pseudoephedrine. It contains inactive ingredients that turn into a thick gel if anyone tries to extract the pseudoephedrine. That means the chemical won't crystallize and can't be made into crystal meth. The Palatine, Ill., company said Nexafed will deliver the same cold and allergy relief as other versions of pseudoephedrine and it will cost about as much as similar cold and allergy remedies. Legislators have taken steps in recent years to combat meth, including a law that took effect this year requiring retailers to enter information about the sale of medications that contains pseudoephedrine onto a national online tracking system. Acura reported its fourth-quarter results Monday, and said that … Continue reading

Pharmacy Council alerts public of fake drugs in markets

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2013

Health News of Tuesday, 5 March 2013 Source: GNA The Pharmacy Council of Ghana has cautioned the public to be wary of fake and expired drugs being sold in the open markets and in buses since they are injurious to health. The Council has subsequently warned members of the public against buying drugs from persons who go about selling assorted drugs in the lorry stations, markets and buses. Mrs Victoria Aryee, Public Affairs Officer of the Pharmacy Council who gave the warning in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said drugs that were sold in polythene bags were not handled properly, and thus exposing them (drugs) to unhygienic conditions. She said drug peddlers who were not registered with any recognised body were often engaged in selling fake drugs to the unsuspecting public. She explained that drugs sold in polythene bags were often open to bad climatic conditions making such drugs lose their efficacy and therefore became harmful for human consumption. Mrs Aryee advised consumers to desist from buying such drugs due to the danger posed, saying it was safer to always buy from registered pharmacies licensed to provide quality care to the citizenry. She assured the public that … Continue reading

Pharmacy group faces industrial action threat over contracts row

Pharmacy group faces industrial action threat over contracts row Wednesday, March 06, 2013 One of the countrys largest pharmacy groups is facing the prospect of industrial action if a dispute over unilateral changes to staff contracts cannot be resolved. Siptu, which is not recognised by Uniphar for collective negotiation purposes, claims the firm is making unlawful deductions from workers pay despite a number of rights commissioner rulings that the deductions are in breech of the Payment of Wages Act. Siptu organiser, Graham Macken, said one worker he was representing had suffered a loss of 27% on her annual income through a reduction in hours, her rate of pay, and the loss of 96 per month which had been paid into her pension. Mr Macken said Siptu has not yet balloted its members for industrial action pending the outcome of upcoming proximity talks with management in relation to one of the 60 outlets in the Uniphar chain OSullivans Pharmacy in Bantry, Co Cork. The Siptu official said the reductions in salary have left some of the employees on the bread line. Yesterday a number of workers at Roches Pharmacy in Gorey, Co Wexford, staged a protest over the situation. Mr Macken … Continue reading
