Pharmacy logs help law enforcement bust Meth lab

Posted: Published on February 8th, 2013

PITTSFIELD, Ill. (WGEM) - You turn to your local pharmacy to get better, but meth makers go there for a key ingredient in their drug. Pseudoephedrine is found in many cold medicines, but are laws to keep it out of the hands of meth makers working? Inside every pharmacy is a database for those who are looking to buy medicine that contains pseudoephedrine. Chances are you just need it to get over a cold, but there are people out there looking to buy up lots of it to make meth. Pike county sheriff Paul petty said that's where pharmacy logs come in handy. "Now that you have to give your name and ID and provide a lot more detail, that helped us," Petty said. If you've bought cold medicine recently, you know there are some hoops to jump through. But that inconvenience is helping law enforcement track down those who are using pseudoephedrine to make meth. State laws only allow Illinois residents to buy 7.5 grams of pseudoephedrine a month but in Missouri, it's 9 grams. Some pharmacies, like Brown Drug in Quincy, set their own regulations. "We only sell customers one package at a time. By law they may … Continue reading

SALINE: Pharmacy burglary suspects charged through investigation of area pharmacy break-ins

Posted: Published on February 8th, 2013

Three suspects have been charged with breaking and entering for the November burglary of Jensen's Community Pharmacy with charges also sought against a fourth suspect. Tammy Hopkins, a 40-year-old Belleville woman, has reportedly been arraigned for the burglary. A 33-year-old Ypsilanti man and 21-year-old Belleville man have also been charged, according to the warrants. Investigators believe the suspects were involved in multiple burglaries throughout southeast Michigan, including the July 21 break in at Saline Pharmacy, 75 E. Bennett St. Detective Don Lupi, Saline Police Department, said this case, like many others, was solved through a member of the public coming forward to police with what they know. In this situation, he said a witness to a similar burglary the same day, Nov. 17, in Monroe County called 911 and gave a description of the suspects' vehicle. "Little did they know what they were calling about was a much larger operation," Lupi said. Monroe police were able to locate the suspects' vehicle, take the suspects into custody and recover stolen property. He said this was fortunate as it allowed the Saline Police Department to also complete its' investigation. "This was a long, multi jurisdiction investigation," Lupi said. "It's nice to put … Continue reading

Pharmacy students prepare for potential robberies

Posted: Published on February 8th, 2013

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- Pharmacy robberies are no surprise to many pharmacists and pharmacy students. Last year, 56 robberies put both the pharmacist and customers in harms way. Four students from Husson University found themselves caught in one of the many robberies. Fourth year student Bruce Jarvi at Husson University never expected it would happen to him, "The experience, it was all very quick. However the time that it happened is embedded in my memory and probably will be for a very long time." Jarvi was working at a local pharmacy when the store was robbed. Jarvi said, "I was surprised to say the least, and it was a unique experience I hope not to have again." Last year pharmacy robberies averaged about one a week. Pharmacy professor Gregory Cameron said, "It means these students when they go on rotation, at least three of these students are going to get robbed. So it's a scary, scary total I should say." After experiencing a robbery followed by a police investigation, Jarvi decided to create a program to prepare pharmacy students for what he said is inevitable. "It's not a question of if, it's a question of when it is going to … Continue reading

CVS Caremark Extends Pharmacy Advisor™ Program to Cover Five Additional Chronic Conditions

Posted: Published on February 8th, 2013

WOONSOCKET, R.I., Feb. 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- CVS Caremark (CVS) has extended its innovative Pharmacy Advisor program to cover an additional five chronic conditions, including asthma, breast cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, depression, and osteoporosis. The condition-based program alerts pharmacists when patients are not adherent to their medication regimens or have a gap in care, allowing them to intervene with patients and communicate with their physicians in real time. Before this program extension, the Pharmacy Advisor program had focused on patients with diabetes or cardiovascular conditions, with more than 3.8 million interventions conducted to date. (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20090226/NE75914LOGO) It is estimated that medication nonadherence costs the U.S. economy nearly $300 billion annually. Studies suggest that poor medication adherence is linked to chronic conditions, and that medication persistence the length of time a patient continues to take a prescribed drug tends to be low for those with chronic conditions. Research also suggests that the design of medically appropriate regimens for individual patients can play a role in improving costs and outcomes associated with adherence,1 and that intervention by pharmacists can reduce gaps in care.2 "We are delighted to extend Pharmacy Advisor and its benefits to patients managing medications associated with additional chronic … Continue reading
