Bessemer pharmacy offers free HIV tests Thursday

Free HIV tests will be offered in Bessemer Thursday as part of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The tests will be offered at FMS Pharmacy downtown from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. They are part of a new testing initiative to be administered by FMS and the Community Pharmacy Residency Program at Samford University. A grant from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will cover the cost of 200 tests, and FMS will continue to offer free HIV screenings every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until the CDC grant is used. Bessemer Mayor Kenneth Gulley is scheduled to speak at the event Thursday at 10 a.m. "It's so important that people be tested," Gulley said in a news release. "Thanks to today's treatments, HIV isn't an automatic death sentence. But you're not going to get those life-saving treatments if you don't know you need them." Script Your Future, a national public awareness campaign about the importance of patients taking their medications regularly, is working with FMS and Samford in the HIV testing initiative. For stealing cancer drugs, UM pharmacy tech gets two years prison, must pay $9 million

A pharmacy technician who looted cancer drugs from the University of Miamis cancer center must serve two years in prison and pay back a staggering $9 million. Manuel Gerardo Pacheco, 55, pleaded guilty Tuesday, closing an embarrassing chapter that exposed lax security for expensive drugs at UMs Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. In all, investigators found that $14 million in prescription drugs had gone missing from the cancer centers pharmacy during Pachecos time there. School leaders blamed a lack of inventory control, and have since said that security has been beefed up to avoid future losses. The investigation began in May 2011 when a UM pharmacy buyer, not trusting software that tracked the medication, noticed that hundreds of syringes of Neulasta, a drug used to boost white blood cells during cancer treatment, were missing. UM investigators focused on Pacheco, who had recently bought a $56,000 BMW without securing a car loan. Later, hidden surveillance twice caught Pacheco removing blue boxes of the drug, slipping them in his lab coast. He confessed after UM security confronted him. Marlborough pharmacy among those cited for violations

The Marlborough compoundingpharmacy West River Pharmacy was one of 11 pharmacies in the state found to be violating industry standards after state officials conducted a series of 40 unannounced inspections, state officials said Tuesday. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health Tuesday said it began the unannounced inspections of compounding pharmacies last fall, following the nationalfungal meningitis outbreak caused by the New England Compounding Center in Framingham. West River Pharmacy was ordered on Dec. 20 to cease and desist all sterile compounding and quarantine all prepared sterile compounds in its possession, DPH said Tuesday in a press release. Officials found that the pharmacy was not be following required standards with regard to facility design and control, DPH said. West River Pharmacy submitted a plan of correction in January, DPH said. As a result of the surprise inspections, 10 other partial or complete cease and desist orders were issued to pharmacies for a variety of violations, DPH said. DPH cited another 21 pharmacies for minor deficiencies that have since been corrected or are in the process of being corrected, the release said.
