Cajon Pharmacy in Redlands holds grand opening

Posted: Published on January 31st, 2013

Cajon Pharmacy grand opening Where: 232 Cajon St., Suite A, Redlands When: Noon to 1 p.m. today Information: 909-792-4922, cajonpharmacy.com The event will include local dignitaries and members of the Redlands Chamber of Commerce, said owner Khalid Mahfouz. President Barack Obama, however, is busy today, Mahfouz joked. Cajon Pharmacy reopened Nov. 1 after being closed for more than a year. CVS, the last owner of the pharmacy founded by Stan and Ellen Weisser in the late 1960s, ceased its operations after opting not to renew its lease in September 2011. Those who used the pharmacy's services over the years loved its small-town feel and that many employees knew their customers' names. Customers appreciated the one-on-one interactions and felt that if they went to other locations, that connection could be lost. When CVS ceased the pharmacy's operations, its staff and customers were sent to other CVS locations in the city. Before its re-opening, new light fixtures, countertops and floors were added, but the same old-fashioned customer service remains, Mahfouz said. Health commissioner touts pharmacy regulations

Posted: Published on January 31st, 2013

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) The state is taking steps to make sure mistakes made at a Massachusetts-based compounding pharmacy blamed for a fatal meningitis outbreak dont occur at similar centers in Tennessee, the states health commissioner said Wednesday. John Dreyzehner told members of the Senate Health and Welfare Committee that what happened at the New England Compounding Center was preventable. The outbreak, discovered in Tennessee in September, is linked to steroid injections from the center. Compounding pharmacies custom-mix medications in doses or in forms that generally arent commercially available. What happened in Massachusetts was tragic, but totally preventable, Dreyzehner said. In Tennessee, the commissioner said the number of people sickened by the outbreak is 147 with 14 deaths. Nationwide, 693 people have gotten sick and 45 people have been killed. Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. Fungal meningitis is not contagious. Dreyzehner said a task force formed by the state Board of Pharmacy has been discussing preventive measures, such as more regulation, and is expected to make recommendations at a hearing on Thursday. He acknowledged that compounding pharmacy regulation is complex, but essential. We need to consider how to do these things more safely … Continue reading

Pharmacy School Could Come to BU

Posted: Published on January 31st, 2013

January 30, 2013 Updated Jan 31, 2013 at 12:40 AM EST Vestal (WBNG Binghamton) -- Binghamton University is considering adding a pharmacy school, opening within three years. President Harvey Stenger made the program a priority during his Jan. 22 State of the University address, and he appears to be following through. BU will research what it would take to bring a pharmacy program to campus, intending to release the results some time between May and September. "I think it's a great opportunity for us to add research in pharmaceutical sciences, in collaborative and synergy with our strength in neuroscience as well as our strength in nursing and in bioengineering," Stenger said. "So it will add a whole new field of research to the campus as well as a practical career directive." The state of New York only has seven pharmacy schools, of which only one--SUNY Buffalo--is public. None of the schools are closer than two or three hours away, Stenger said. BU appears to be a good fit for a pharmacy program. More than a third of its students already study STEM majors -- science, technology, engineering and mathematics -- according to a Jan. 28 article in BU's student newspaper, … Continue reading
