Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Faculty Member Receives $353,400 Grant for Leukemia Research

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2013

COLCHESTER, VT--(Marketwire - Jan 28, 2013) - Karen Glass, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences' Vermont Campus, has been awarded a three-year research grant totaling $353,400 from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Glass will seek to identify new ways to prevent and treat a type of leukemia called Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). What is AML?AML is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. In AML patients, cells that would typically develop into white blood cells, important for the immune system, grow at an abnormal rate, thereby interfering with the production of normal blood cells. Research ProjectSubstances such as proteins regularly bind to our DNA, and in so doing, cause genes to be expressed or repressed (these binding substances are called "transcription factors"). The resulting series of interactions contribute to a range of bodily processes, one of which is the development of blood cells, including bone marrow cells. Genetic mutations, however, can cause these cellular processes to break down. In AML, there is a mutation known as chromosomal translocation, where a chromosome breaks and incorrectly re-fuses to another chromosome. Factors including environmental toxins, benzene exposure, and drugs … Continue reading

Judge freezes assets of owners of meningitis-linked pharmacy

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2013

BOSTON (Reuters) - A bankruptcy judge on Monday froze the assets of the owners of the pharmacy linked to a deadly U.S. meningitis outbreak. Orders signed by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Henry Boroff temporarily restrict the owners of New England Compounding Center (NECC) from selling their luxury homes or spending up to $21 million they received last year in salary and shareholder distributions. NECC filed for bankruptcy protection in December after U.S. authorities shut down its pharmacy operations amid a meningitis outbreak that has killed 44 people and sickened nearly 700 others, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Boroff also ordered three companies affiliated with NECC, including Ameridose LLC, from paying money to the individual owners. Ameridose has paid money to NECC, though, to fund its legal defense and bankruptcy counsel, court filings show. "This is a victory for the creditors committee," said Anne Andrews of Andrews & Thornton of Irvine, California, a co-chair of the creditors committee. The judge's rulings came in response to an emergency motion of the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors. The group launched an investigation after the payments to the owners were revealed January 18 in court filings. The creditors' group, which includes meningitis … Continue reading

Keynote Speaker: Jonathan Edison bull; Presented by SPEAK Inc. Inspirational Business Speaker Author Armed with vision, a mission to inspire and a powerful story, Jonathan has already taught more than 500000 people the life-changing principles of how to Make Your Own Magic. Growing up in an environment that was a prescription for failure, young John John -- his grandmother`s affectionate nickname for him -- faced many hardships. Although love generously bestowed by his parents and grandmother was a constant factor in his early years, Jonathan`s childhood was extremely difficult. After exposing him to drugs and violence, his mother was removed from the household by the Department of Social Services when he was seven years old. Two years later Jonathan`s father left to start a new family on another side of town. The grandmother that took over his upbringing died suddenly when he was 14. Now homeless, Jonathan was forced to take up residence in his aunt`s basement. To afford the $50.00 a month in rent and his portion of the electric bill, he worked a full-time job as a dishwasher/bus boy at Chili`s Grill and Bar in the evenings and on weekends. He became a father at 15, graduated from … Continue reading
