Pharmacy blamed for outbreak paid $70 million to insiders

Posted: Published on January 25th, 2013

Posted: 7:42 PM Updated: 8:32 PM The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD, Mass. An attorney for creditors of a pharmacy blamed for a nationwide meningitis outbreak said Thursday that the firm paid out $70 million to company insiders over the last six years. Attorney David Molton made the disclosure at a U.S. Bankruptcy Court hearing in Springfield as he argued that creditors should be allowed to seek to freeze the assets of the New England Compounding Center's owners. Molton said the company had paid its four owners, or companies they owned, $37 million over the last two years, $68 million over the last four years and $70.5 million over the last six years. He argued the company's history of big payouts indicated there was a "grave, grave, grave risk" that what remained of those payments would be further depleted before creditors get paid. "When money came in, it went out," Molton said. Judge Henry Boroff granted the motion and scheduled a hearing Friday on arguments about tying up the defendants' assets. A tainted steroid produced by the Framingham-based compounding pharmacy has been linked to a fungal meningitis outbreak that's killed 44 people and sickened more than 600. The outbreak was discovered in … Continue reading

Pharmacy owner nabbed for illegally selling Nubain

Posted: Published on January 25th, 2013

Cebu Daily News A pharmacy owner allegedly involved in the illegal sale of Nubain, a regulated painkiller, was arrested in a buy-bust operation yesterday afternoon. Napoleon Ricamora, a registered nurse and owner of Nars Paharmacy, was arrested after a brief chase with police. Also arrested was Ricamoras alleged cohort, Calvin Klein Caete. Police said the suspects met an agent of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in Central Visayas (PDEA-7) who acted as a poseur-buyer during the operation in barangay Capitol Site, Cebu City. The transaction took place near a hospital. Police said it was Caete who approached the poseur-buyer while Ricamora stayed in a Toyota Fortuner SUV. Caete allegedly handed over 30 ampules of Nubain worth P9,600 to the PDEA agent. Ricamora then got off the SUV and joined in the transaction. PDEA operatives moved in when the poseur-buyer handed over the P5,000 marked money to the suspects. PDEA agents cornered Caete but Ricamora was able to run to his car and drove off. Pharmacy attracts students from far far away

(L-R) Carrissa James and Alana Purcell were among the 22 students who attended the camp. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from as far as away as Humpty Doo in the Northern Territory attended the inaugural University of Sydney Pharmacy Indigenous Camp held this week. Carissa James from Lismore in northern NSW, and Alana Purcell from Cairns in Queensland, were among 22 high school students who attended the four-day Pharmacy Indigenous Camp (SydPIC). SydPic was aimed at boosting the numbers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders currently employed in the pharmacy profession. With fewer than 50 registered pharmacists in Australia who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, course coordinators Drs Nial Wheate and Rebekah Moles believe it is imperative more Aboriginal pharmacists be trained, particularly in regions where Aboriginal communities are lacking health professionals. Dr Nial Wheate believes the shortage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pharmacists has been a result of lack of engagement with high school students about career options in pharmacy. "We developed the camp to bring together interested students from all around Australia to get a taste of what it's like to be a pharmacist and experience university life first-hand. "During the camp the students … Continue reading
