Can prescriptions lead to heroin?

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2012

CLEVELAND - Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge David Matia presides over the county's drug court and what he sees every day should open the eyes of anyone who has received a prescription for painkillers from their doctor. "Eighty percent of the Cuyahoga County felony court docket are either directly drug related or drug driven crimes" said Judge Matia. "Sixty percent in Drug Court are opiate dependent and half of them got their start by treating legitimate medical conditions, the rise is in prescription drugs [opiates] and when they can't get any more, they move to heroin." The traditional view of drug addiction has changed. Now it includes our neighbors, co-workers and family members and a simple trip to the doctor for many was the catalyst that began their road to addiction. Judge Matia suggests that everyone check their medicine cabinets, and those of our elderly parents, for unused prescription medications. That forgotten bottle of pills could be irresistible lure to a friend or family member. Copyright 2012 Scripps Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Stars offer prescriptions for Emmy-day nerves: For Amy Poehler, it's 'a small children's pool of sangria'

Posted: Published on September 18th, 2012

LOS ANGELES Attending the Emmy Awards as a nominee is the kind of heady experience that sends even veteran actors' and show-runners' tummies aflutter. But, of course, the show must go on. Stars say they turn to booze, tunes and deep breaths to prepare for such moments. Here's what some of this year's nominees would prescribe for a case of Emmy-day nerves: "Oh, gosh. Maybe some vodka. A flask of vodka, I think. Don't you think? Oh, absolutely. Maybe a Quaalude. Perfect. There you go." Jesse Tyler Ferguson of "Modern Family." "Oh, you mean pharmaceutically? Hmm. Baby aspirin. Baby aspirin and maybe just like a small children's pool of sangria." Amy Poehler of "Parks and Recreation." "Champagne always makes a person happy. At least a bottle. Yeah. For myself." Maya Rudolph, nominated for hosting "Saturday Night Live." "Oh, good lord. Buckets and bucket of rose champagne." Sarah Paulson, up for her supporting role in the HBO movie "Game Change." "Music. Music. I'm going to vote for either Adele's '21' or Decemberists' 'The King is Dead.' Music soothes the savage beast." Mayim Bialik of "The Big Bang Theory." "You know, I'm not picky. I'm really not picky. I say ... My … Continue reading

Councilman discusses requiring prescriptions for medicines containing pseudoephedrine

Posted: Published on September 10th, 2012

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A city councilman is looking into requiring people to have a prescription before buying medications with pseudoephedrine, a key ingredient used to make meth. Councilman Jeff Seifried is not saying he supports having a prescription to buy these drugs. He wants to start a discussion. "I've seen the effects it has on people in my zone and in Springfield. It's real. It's not out of sight, out of mind for me," he said. Jeff Seifried oversees Zone 1. That's the northwest side of Springfield. Police have busted more meth labs here than anywhere else in town. He has not made up his mind if he supports banning over-the-counter sales of meds with pseudoephedrine. "The languages I have asked to be drafted deals with pseudoephedrine. The reason why I asked for that is to kick off the discussion. I want to know what can we do? Is that something that's working on other communities. If so, do we need to look at it for Springfield?" he asked. In just one year, between 2010-2011 the number of meth labs found in Springfield nearly doubled to more than 100. Officials say this conversation is long over due. Seifried hopes to … Continue reading

Prescriptions for N.J. marijuana hard to get

Posted: Published on September 6th, 2012

Many of the doctors who recently registered with New Jersey's medical marijuana program are not accepting new patients, while some are charging nearly $500 in cash for visits before they will recommend the drug. That may explain why only 130 patients have signed up so far for the state's new program, say members of the Coalition for Medical Marijuana-New Jersey, a patient advocacy group that has been pushing for the alternative pain relief for more than five years. In Arizona, more than 700 patients applied to use marijuana when that state's program opened last year. "I wondered what it would be like for a hospice patient to try to navigate the program and to find a doctor," said Vanessa Waltz, a coalition board member who telephoned all 148 doctors listed on the state Department of Health's website last month when the patient registry was launched. Since then, the number has grown to 160 doctors - out of nearly 36,000 licensed physicians in the state. The program is not yet operational as no marijuana dispensary has received final approvals to sell to patients. A dispensary in Montclair, Essex County, is expecting to open this month. Waltz, a breast cancer survivor who … Continue reading

Joseph Wagner The Daytona Beach chiropractor whose practice was raided by federal agents last summer under suspicion that he was prescribing pain pills and defrauding insurance companies pleaded guilty to those offenses Tuesday morning in federal court. Joseph Burrell Wagner, 62, will be sentenced by U.S. District Judge G. Kendall Sharp in Orlando on Nov. 28, court records show. Wagner, during an eight-minute hearing, pleaded guilty to health care fraud, conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance and money laundering, the U.S. Attorney's Office said and court records show. Other charges related to these three offenses were dropped. In addition, FBI investigators said in an indictment in late June that Wagner dispensed 2,609 pills using the identifications of "medical doctors, " most notably Dr. John Peter Christensen of West Palm Beach. The names of other doctors have never been provided by investigators. Joseph Wagner is the father of Volusia County Councilman and attorney Josh Wagner. Last August, Joseph Wagner's clinic on North Ridgewood Avenue in Daytona Beach was raided by the FBI and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement after former clients of the chiropractor reported he was dispensing pain pills and charging insurance companies for treatment he never administered to … Continue reading

By Paul Tugwell - 2012-08-26T11:34:57Z The Pan-Hellenic Pharmaceutical Association, which represents Greeces 12,000 pharmacies, said its members will no longer supply drugs prescribed by the countrys National Organization for Health Care Provision without immediate payment in cash starting Sept. 1. Pharmacists called on the organization, Greeces largest state-run health care provider known as Eopyy, to pay outstanding debts of more than 85 days. They also want the government to immediately start financing Eopyy with an amount equal to 0.6 percent of gross domestic product as well as to guarantee bank loans taken by pharmacists, the association said late yesterday in a statement on its website. Eopyy has only made part payment to pharmacists for providing medicines in May and hasnt paid for any prescription drugs since June, the association said Aug. 8. Eopyy still owes money from 2011 at a time when international drug companies no longer offer credit to Greek pharmacists, the association said at the time. It didnt give a figure for the total debt. TRENTON, N.J. Struggling to pay for your prescription medication? Youre far from alone: Studies show about a quarter of patients dont take medicines they need because they cannot afford them. There are plenty of ways to save big on medicines, but the complexity of finding the best deal can be a huge headache. Along with patient assistance programs, there are countless coupons and discount cards are available. Here are some guidelines and sources to try: For starters, when a doctor is about to write a prescription, jump in with key questions: Are free samples available? Is the drug is generally covered by insurance plans? Is there a cheaper drug that will work as well? Is there a generic version? ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS: A patient assistance program might be able to help. They generally have income limits and other eligibility rules, but some are fairly generous, particularly for newer drugs for cancer or rare diseases that can cost $20,000 a year or more.
