Posted: Published on June 26th, 2014
Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Research to Prevent Blindness, a New York-based foundation, has announced that University of Utah researcher Wolfgang Baehr, Ph.D., will receive the Nelson Trust Award for Retinitis Pigmentosaand an accompanying $100,000 to pursue new scientific leads to understand contributors to blindness. The award, established in 2014, is designed to stimulate, strengthen and accelerate research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of retinitis pigmentosa, a group of genetic disorders that affect the retinas ability to respond to light. The inherited disease causes a slow loss of vision that eventually results in blindness. This award will allow one of the top researchers in the country to continue investigating the understanding of retinal diseases that lead to blindness, said Randall J. Olson, M.D., CEO of the University of Utahs John A. Moran Eye Center. Dr.Baehrs work has already had far-reaching impacts for bettering the visual health of people around the world and this generous grant from Research to Prevent Blindness will allow him to continue uncovering important discoveries, said Olson. Baehr joined the Moran Eye Center in 1995 as a Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of the Foundation Fighting Blindness Center. Baehrs work has impacted the … Continue reading

$50 million or more pledged to fight blindness
Posted: Published on June 22nd, 2014
Gordon Gund is the CEO of a venture capitalist fund, the former principal owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers and a member of the Kellogg Co.'s board of directors. He has also been blind for more than 40 years. On Saturday, Gund announced that his family plans to give $50 million or more in matching gifts to the Foundation Fighting Blindness, a Columbia-based nonprofit that he co-founded. "Our family is committed to finishing the job we helped start, and we hope this Challenge requires us to match as much as is needed to fast-track progress for promising treatments from the lab to clinical trials," Gund said in a statement. The funds will be used to speed research into new methods for treating degenerative diseases of the retina and restoring the vision of those who are blind. Gund, along with his relatives and businesses, has already donated more than $130 million to the foundation, the organization said. He hopes to raise $100 million through the matching program over the next six years. Gund lost his vision to retinitis pigmentosa in 1970 when he was 30. He helped start what was then called the Retinitis Pigmentosa Foundation the following year. Now 74, Gund … Continue reading

Alderson, who is blind, completed the two-year auto mechanic program at Dona Ana Community College. He earned his degree by listening and learning to feel his way around the vehicle, KOAT-TVreported. Associated Press Tuesday, June 17, 2014 | 2:08 p.m. LAS CRUCES, N.M. A blind New Mexico man who recently earned an auto mechanics degree is looking for a job. Clifford Alderson, 48, a graduate from a joint New Mexico State University-Dona Ana Community College program, earned his degree by listening and learning to feel his way around the vehicle, KOAT-TV reports. Born with retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic disease that led to his blindness, Alderson got his on-the-job training at a small auto shop in Alamogordo and plans on making a career out of his talents. His mother has the disease, as does his 15-year-old daughter, Lydia. "When I graduated it didn't feel like I graduated. I felt like I was in a dream," said Alderson, who walks with a collapsible cane. Damian Orchard, of All … Continue reading

Man overcomes blindness to fulfill dream to become auto mechanic

Clifford Anderson said he feels like hes living a dream. Alderson, 48, recently earned his auto mechanics degree from a joint New Mexico State University-Dona Ana Community College program by listening and learning to feel his way around the vehicle, KOAT-TV reported. Damian Orchard, of All Makes Automotive, says, for the most part, he could just tell Alderson what needed to be done on a car and Alderson takes care of the rest. "A good majority of (the repairs) I could turn Cliff loose, once I told him what we needed to do," Orchard said. Orchard told the Albuquerque Journal that the repairs Alderson can tackle include brake jobs, shocks, water and power steering pumps, alternators, and changing hoses. Joe Retana, a professor at the auto mechanics program, said Alderson … Continue reading

New Seattle-based organization trains guide dogs for visually impaired

Originally published June 15, 2014 at 6:58 PM | Page modified June 16, 2014 at 5:05 PM Meeting with Toby Willis, you may not notice his visual impairment. He greets you with a cheery smile and a friendly handshake. He makes eye contact with you during conversation. He treads carefully but confidently, sans walking cane. But you will notice his sidekick: a young German Shepherd guide dog named Dazzler. Willis, at 40 years old, has gradually lost his vision to retinitis pigmentosa since early childhood. He said his guide dog has been a big factor in creating a normal life for him, increasing his sense of safety and freedom, and expanding social opportunities. Disheartened by the shortage of guide dogs available for visually impaired individuals in the United States, he was inspired to take matters into his own hands. In 2011, he founded Independence Guide Dogs (IGD), a nonprofit organization based at his home near Georgetown, to help train guide dogs for blind and visually impaired individuals. IGD is run predominantly by a group of 30 volunteers, Willis included, as well as two certified guide-dog trainers and a few contractors. Their mission, he said, is to increase independence for individuals … Continue reading
