Grandmother of five from Poynton set to take part in record sky diving attempt A super gran is leaping out of a plane to fund research into a disease that is making her blind. Jean Drinkwater, 67, has retinitis pigmentosa, a hereditary and degenerative eye disease for which there is no cure. In the last decade the gradual decline of her eyesight has turned her life upside down. The grandmother of five from Poynton had to retire early and relies on her husband Roger, 70, and guide dog Kit to help her get around. Her only hope is that doctors find a cure to the disease before she shares the same fate as her mother and goes completely blind. In a bid to speed up research, Jean is taking part in a world record sky dive attempt on June 14. Jean, of Charlecote Road, said: At the moment there is no cure to this disease so my only hope is that research speeds up and for that to happen they need money. Even if they cannot help me I hope they can find a cure for future generations. Before her eyesight began to fail Jean set up and managed Macclesfield … Continue reading

[Video feature] Enabling India's Disabled

Posted: Published on May 24th, 2014

Disability isnt the problem, the lack of solutions that work for the disabled is, says Shanti Raghavan. Shantis brother, Hari, started losing his eyesight at the age of fifteen due to retinitis pigmentosa, a disease that gradually diminishes eyesight. During Haris visit to the US, where Shanti and her husband lived at the time, they collectively decided that if he couldnt see, that didnt mean he couldnt do. And so, they did: they attempted every kind of adventure sport and every ing, including swimming, kayaking and snorkeling. This is the summer that initiated Shanti and her husband, Dipesh, into the world of empowering people with disabilities. In this inspiring and rather motivating conversation on Chai wtih Lakshmi, Shanti shares about how her non-profit organisation Enable India is enabling thousands of people with disabilities, helping them contribute on par with the abled. The organisation works closely with corporates, the state government and with individuals to train and create employment for differently abled people. Any person with disability actually can do any job, if they have the right solution. I call it the workplace solution. For instance if you or I want to see at night we would use a torch, and … Continue reading

Some links on this page may take you to organizations outside of the National Institutes of Health. Overview Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is the name given to a group of inherited eye diseases that affect thelight-sensitive part of the eye (retina). RP causes cells in the retina to breakdown and die, eventually resulting in vision loss. The first sign of RP is usually night blindness. As the condition progresses, affected individuals alsodevelop tunnel vision.Sometimes RP occurs by itself (isolated RP), and other times it occurs with additional signs and symptoms (syndromic RP).Mutationsin at least 50 genes have been found tocause RP. There is no cure for RP, however, there are a few treatment options to slow down the progression of the disease. These options include light avoidance, use of low-vision aids, and vitamin A supplementation.[1] Last updated: 10/14/2011 Office of Rare Diseases Research National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) National Institutes of Health 301-402-4336 6701 Democracy Boulevard, Suite 1001, Bethesda, MD 20892 See the original post here: Retinitis pigmentosa | Disease | Overview | Office of Rare ... … Continue reading

Retinitis Pigmentosa – Cleveland Clinic

Posted: Published on May 13th, 2014

What is retinitis pigmentosa? The eye is often compared to a camera. The front of the eye contains a lens that focuses images on the inside of the back of the eye. This area, called the retina, is covered with special nerve cells that react to light. These nerve cells include the rods and cones. The rods and cones react to light because they contain pigments that change color when light strikes them. In some people, however, there is a problem with these pigments. The rods (and sometimes the cones) gradually stop working, and the retina begins to deteriorate. There are several kinds inherited medical conditions that can cause this problem, which is called retinitis pigmentosa. According to The Foundation Fighting Blindness, there are about 100,000 people with retinitis pigmentosa in the United States. Today, doctors know a lot about how the condition is inherited, but researchers are still trying to find out exactly why certain combinations of genes cause retinitis pigmentosa. Someone with retinitis pigmentosa will notice gradual changes in vision, including: Retinitis pigmentosa usually affects both eyes. In some forms of the condition, vision continues to get worse. In other types of retinitis pigmentosa, only a small area … Continue reading

Non-Invasive Technique Can Identify Genetic Carriers of Eye Disease

Posted: Published on May 9th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Orlando, Fla. Scientists have developed a non-invasive technique to determine if individuals carry a gene for an inherited eye disease known as retinitis pigmentosa. The research is being presented at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) this week in Orlando, Fla. The technique involves collecting a patients urine and measuring the ratio between specific compounds. The non-invasive process makes subsequent testing clinic-friendly, especially for children being screened. Retinitis pigmentosa is a group of inherited conditions where patients progressively lose the ability to see. Development of the disease can include night blindness and tunnel vision, eventually leading to the loss of sight.
