Police officer Chris Bent wants to raise enough money to take his Disney princess loving daughter Molly to see the magical kingdom before she loses her sight A police officer is aiming to raise 2,500 to take his daughter to Disneyland before she goes blind. PC Chris Bent and his pals are training hard for the Bupa Great Manchester Run to raise funds to create magical memories for little Molly. The six-year-old suffers from retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic condition that causes patches on the retina at the back of the eye, affecting the field of vision. For Molly, these symptoms are already noticeable and are getting profoundly worse. Unfortunately there is no treatment or cure for Retinitis Pigmentosa. Chris said: "We want to give Molly some great memories while she is still able to see most things." "She is a little girl who loves Disney Princesses so friends are sponsoring us to run so we can take her to Disneyland Paris. Ever thought about what it might be like to have a bionic eye? Surgeons at the University of Michigan Health System have. On Jan. 16 and 22, UMHS retina surgeons performed the first-ever surgeries that implanted artificial retinas into the eyes of patients with retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease that eventually causes blindness. Formally named the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System, the bionic eye device was developed by California-based Second Sight Medical Products, Inc. Thiran Jayasundera and David N. Zacks, professors of ophthalmology and visual sciences at the Universitys Kellogg Eye Center, are the first surgeons to implant the device since it gained approval from the Food and Drug Administration last year. UMHS has been chosen as one of 12 centers nationally to offer the retinal prosthesis to patients. Jayasundera said UMHS contacted Second Sight and requested access to the product. The company then visited UMHS to complete a site inspection. We wanted to offer this to our patients because we see a lot of patients with advanced pigmentosa, Jayasundera said. I dont see myself as being any different than anyone else, Foley said. I know what I can do and what I am capable of doing. I want to show everyone that I am no different. Foley, who has been visually impaired since birth, is a member of the schools cross country, swimming and track teams despite being legally blind due to retinitis pigmentosa, a hereditary degenerative disease of the retina. Fostering a love for sports Foley has participated in track and swim meets since kindergarten. I love track, Foley said. Im a sprinter, and thats what I am good at. WASHINGTON: Doctors in US have successfully implanted an artificial retina in two near-blind patients to allow them to see objects, light and people standing before them. Thiran Jayasundera and David N Zacks, from the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center performed the surgeries for patients with end-stage retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a degenerative and blinding eye disease. "We are pleased with both patients' progress at this point, and we are hopeful and optimistic that the artificial retina will enable them to see objects, light and people standing before them," Jayasundera said. "We believe the device will help them navigate a little better at home, be more independent, and have the pleasure of seeing things that the rest of us take for granted," said Jayasundara. The device Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration last year. The retinal prosthesis is not activated until the patient has sufficiently recovered from surgery.
