Kellogg retina surgeons implant Argus II Retinal Prosthesis, or 'bionic eye,' for two patients with end-stage retinitis pigmentosa ANN ARBOR, Mich., Jan. 29, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --Retina surgeons at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center have performed the first and second -- surgeries in the United States to implant an artificial retina, or "bionic eye," since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the device last year. Thiran Jayasundera, M.D., and David N. Zacks, M.D., Ph.D., performed the surgeries for patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a degenerative and blinding eye disease. "We are pleased with both patients' progress at this point, and we are hopeful and optimistic that the artificial retina will enable them to see objects, light and people standing before them," says Jayasundera, assistant professor of ophthalmology at the U-M Medical School. "We believe the device will help them navigate a little better at home, be more independent, and have the pleasure of seeing things that the rest of us take for granted." As a teenager, doctors diagnosed him with retinitis pigmentosa, an eye disease. In 1988 he was declared legally blind, but Loveday continued to work, putting in 35 years as an engineer, supervisor and in manual labor until he was laid off. Now Loveday has reinvented himself into a successful business entrepreneur thanks in part to the Florida Division of Blind Services' Bureau of Business Enterprise. A business venture by the bureau will soon take Loveday into the Marion County Judicial Center as the operator of a new concession space. Though he's been declared legally blind, Loveday's illness doesn't leave him disabled. He can see in well-lit spaces and sometimes uses a cane to move around. "People just don't understand," he said of many misconceptions he has encountered concerning his sight. "To simplify it, it's basically the retina crystallizes and you basically end up with no periphery (vision) whatsoever," said Loveday, 58, of Ocklawaha. Comander, M.D., Ph.D. The support will be provided over a four-year period. The RPB Career Development Award Fund was established in 1990 to attract young physicians and basic scientists to eye research. To date, the program has given awards to 174 vision research scientists in departments of ophthalmology at universities across the country. Dr. Comander's current research efforts are focused on studying patients with inherited retinal degenerations, including retinitis pigmentosa (RP), which is caused by genetic mutations inherited from one or both parents. Most people who suffer from RP typically experience a steady visual decline during their lifetime, with many patients becoming blind. The disease affects approximately 100,000 people in the U.S. and 2 million people worldwide.
