RetroSense Therapeutics Raises $6 million in Series A Financing to Further Develop Lead Product RST-001 for Retinitis …
Posted: Published on January 9th, 2015
ANN ARBOR, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--RetroSense Therapeutics (www.retro-sense.com), a privately-held biopharmaceutical company, today announced that it has secured $6 million in a Series A financing to further investigate the use of gene therapy and optogenetics to restore vision loss. The investment syndicate includes Nerveda, Blue Water Angels, SDL Ventures, Tech Coast Angels, and Michigan Economic Development Corporation. The proceeds should enable completion of preclinical studies needed to support an Investigational New Drug (IND) filing with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its lead compound, RST-001 for the treatment of Retinitis Pigmentosa, a cause of vision loss and blindness. We believe this financing round should provide us with sufficient capital resources to support our IND filing in early 2015 for our lead product, RST-001, said Sean Ainsworth, CEO of RetroSense Therapeutics. We are focused on developing novel treatment options for patients with severe vision loss due to retinitis pigmentosa and completion of our preclinical studies will be the next step towards filing an IND and initiating clinical trials. Optogenetics refers broadly to means of conferring light sensitivity to cells that were not previously, or natively light sensitive. By applying optogenetics to retinas in which rod and cone photoreceptors have degenerated, RetroSense is … Continue reading

York Co. kid becomes chief of police department
Posted: Published on December 30th, 2014
Updated: Tuesday, December 30 2014, 06:35 PM EST By: Donna Kirker Morgan SPRINGETTSBURY TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A York County police department had new leadership, at least for a day. Springettsbury Township Police Chief Thomas Hyers handed over command to 12-year-old Johnathen Speelman for a few hours on Tuesday. Speelman suffers from retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease that will eventually blind him. To show Johnathen support, Springettsbury Township police signed him in, showed him stun guns and riot shields, and escorted Speelman and his friends around the department. The West York Area Middle school student even pulled someone over, warning them to get their tail light fixed, but not issuing a ticket. Hyers said he's learned a lot from Johnathen. "I've been in law enforcement for 30 years, and a 12-year-old boy has impacted me. A 12-year-old boy has taught someone who has done this for a long time, no matter what you're faced with you can overcome it. Just be positive. Think positive. Do good things and it will all work out," Hyers said. West York teachers have started a fundraiser for Speelman. Their goal is to send him on a limousine trip around Washington, D.C. To donate, visit … Continue reading

RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA | Foundation Fighting Blindness
Posted: Published on December 24th, 2014
What is retinitis pigmentosa? Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) refers to a group of inherited diseases causing retinal degeneration. The cell-rich retina lines the back inside wall of the eye. It is responsible for capturing images from the visual field. People with RP experience a gradual decline in their vision because photoreceptor cells (rods and cones) die. Forms of RP and related diseases include Usher syndrome, Lebers congenital amaurosis, rod-cone disease, Bardet-Biedl syndrome, and Refsum disease, among others. Symptoms depend on whether rods or cones are initially involved. In most forms of RP, rods are affected first. Because rods are concentrated in the outer portions of the retina and are triggered by dim light, their degeneration affects peripheral and night vision. When the more centrally located cones - responsible for color and sharp central vision - become involved, the loss is in color perception and central vision. Night blindness is one of the earliest and most frequent symptoms of RP. People with mainly cone degeneration, however, first experience decreased central vision and ability to discriminate color. RP is typically diagnosed in adolescents and young adults. It is a progressive disorder. The rate of progression and degree of visual loss varies from person … Continue reading

Amarantus Gets FDA Orphan Drug Status For Retinitis Pigmentosa Treatment MANF
Posted: Published on December 24th, 2014
By RTT News, December 23, 2014, 04:22:00 PM EDT (RTTNews.com) - Amarantus BioScience Holdings, Inc. ( AMBS ) said Tuesday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted the company's investigational drug MANF orphan drug designation for the treatment of Retinitis Pigmentosa. Retinitis Pigmentosa refers to a group of inherited diseases causing retinal degeneration often leading to blindness. MANF, a naturally-occurring protein that reduces and prevents apoptosis in response to injury or disease, was discovered utilizing Amarantus' proprietary PhenoGuard Protein Discovery Engine. Pre-clinical data showed that MANF provided protective functional effects in an animal model of Retinitis Pigmentosa. Moreover, toxicology studies have demonstrated that MANF was well-tolerated following a single intravitreal administration of a therapeutically relevant dose. The FDA Orphan Drug Designation program provides a special status to drugs and biologics intended to treat, diagnose or prevent so-called orphan diseases and disorders that affect fewer than 200,000 people in the U.S. The designation provides for a seven-year marketing exclusivity period against competition, as well as certain incentives, including federal grants, tax credits and a waiver of PDUFA filing fees.
