InVivo Therapeutics Announces Update to the Contemporary Thoracic SCI Registry Study (the CONTEMPO Registry … – Business Wire (press release)

Posted: Published on May 30th, 2017

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--InVivo Therapeutics Holdings Corp. (NVIV)today announced that data from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation NACTN Registry will be included in the Contemporary Thoracic SCI Registry Study (now called the CONTEMPO Registry Study), a complement to the ongoing INSPIRE study of the Neuro-Spinal Scaffold. The CONTEMPO Registry Study is intended to provide comprehensive natural history benchmarks for INSPIRE study results that include spinal cord injury (SCI) patients with similar baseline characteristics treated since 2006. The NACTN registry is derived from a network of academic neurosurgical departments of hospitals that have a strong focus on SCI, especially in the acute injury phase. The NACTN Registry includes acute patient data such as pre- and post-operative data, post-injury complications and treatments, MRI data, and follow-up neurological exams. Because the NACTN registry contains acute care data, it will allow for the close matching of registry patient characteristics with INSPIRE inclusion and exclusion criteria, and will be highlighted in the CONTEMPO Registry Study as a well matched natural history benchmark comparator for INSPIRE results. The CONTEMPO Registry Study will provide a robust evaluation of the recent natural history of acute, complete thoracic SCI patients across North American and European populations. InVivo has submitted … Continue reading

Long-term response of different Botulinum toxins in refractory neurogenic detrusor overactivity due to spinal cord … – UroToday

Posted: Published on May 29th, 2017

To assess the response in spinal cord injured patients alternatively treated with different types and dosages of Botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT/A) over 15 years. Patients who underwent first BoNT/A from 1999-2001 and practiced intermittent catheterization were included. Baseline 3-day bladder diary (BD) and urodynamics were collected. BoNT/A failure was defined when patients asked for re-injection 3 months post-treatment. Criteria for re-injection was at least one daily episode of urinary incontinence at BD. Before re-injection, patients were asked if they had reached 6 months of dryness without antimuscarinics (YES response). Overall, 32/60 (53.4%) "No failure" (NF) group; 16 (26.6%) "occasional failure" (OF) and 12 (20%) "consecutive failure" (CF) were included. A total of 822 BoNT/A infiltrations were performed. The mean interval from previous injection to treatment re-scheduling was 8 months. No significant differences between treatments were found within the three groups (p>0.05). The percentage of YES responses increased from 19% (AboBoNT/A 500IU) to 29 % (OnaBoNT/A 300IU) in NF, and from 18% (AboBoNT/A 500IU) to 25% (OnaBoNT/A 300IU) for OF. Five NF cases (15.6%) maintained 6 months of dryness after each injection. Among the baseline variables, only low compliance (< 20mL/cmH2O) was found as predictor for failure (p=0.006). Long term … Continue reading

TBI Blogs: This Wheelchair-Bound Doctor Pioneered Spinal Cord Injury Treatment & Rehabilitation in India – The Better India (blog)

Posted: Published on May 27th, 2017

May 26th is the birthday of Dr Mary Verghese, who pioneered Indias first specialised facility to rehabilitate persons with spinal cord injury. Quality Rehabilitation is still the only way out, as there is no cure for spinal cord injury anywhere. Dr Vergheses vision for rehabilitation in India was inspired by her experience with spinal cord injury, that imposes multiple disabilities at one stroke. When Dr Verghese had a glimpse of what Quality Rehabilitation could do for a person with spinal cord injury in Australia in the late 1950s, her thinking was limited to what it meant for her life. This rehabilitation experience in Australia sparked the vision of a specialised rehabilitation facility in India, when none existed at the time. Dr Verghese was well-placed to pursue her ambition of becoming a gynaecologist, having completed her MBBS in 1952 from one of Indias highly rated colleges, Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore. As doctors who had devoted their lives to the needy were around her at her alma mater, she received good basic care. The motivation provided by Dr Paul Brand, globally renowned as the pioneer of tendon-transplant operations that restore functioning of hands and feet in persons with leprosy, gave Dr. … Continue reading

Parents of boy critically injured in hit-and-run bus crash thank God, others for his survival – LancasterOnline

Posted: Published on May 27th, 2017

Noam Weaver was ejected and pinned under a bus carrying more than a dozen Lancaster Mennonite students in East Lampeter Township. The first news account we read about the accident in which our son was critically injured said that he was fighting for his life, the letter, signed by Mike, Sheri, Noam and Eden Weaver, begins. Anyone who knows our Noam knows that he is energetic and persistent, so that statement could not have been truer, the letter continues. With injuries to his spleen and lungs and fractures of his pelvis, ribs and right arm, and severe abrasions on his face and left elbow, his life indeed hung in the balance. Most of the 14 students and two adults hurt in the crash came out with only minor injuries. Besides Noam, a 16-year-old boy was also seriously hurt. On Wednesday, Lancaster County District Attorney Craig Stedman said the conditions of both boys had improved, and they are expected to recover from their injuries. The district attorney said Irvin was driving a Chevrolet Malibu registered to his parents at the time of the crash. Irvin has been cited five times for driving under a suspended license since 2004, police said. Irvin, … Continue reading

Victims want prevention and treatment, not more incarceration – Street Roots News

COMMENTARY | Oregon legislators are considering a bill that reflects these preferences Crime survivors have a seat at the public safety table, but to ensure that criminal justice policy solutions reflect victims needs, advocates should always seek more ways to elevate those voices. So at this public safety crossroads, while Oregon lawmakers debate whether to open a second prison for women, its fortuitous that a first-of-its-kind study has emerged to shed light on survivors perspectives on criminal justice policies. The National Survey on Victims Views confirms that theres no unified victims voice and that people impacted by crime are as diverse a group as any. The survey does reveal some general preferences among survivors, though. In the broad-reaching paper, findings include identifying the groups that are most vulnerable to crime, assessing how incidents impact victims, asking whether the criminal justice system is meeting survivors needs, and inquiring about victims perspectives of the criminal justice system and public safety policies. This last set of responses is one that merits Oregons attention right now, and there we find that the overwhelming majority of crime victims believe that the criminal justice system relies too heavily on incarceration, and strongly prefer investments in prevention … Continue reading
