Shriners Hospitals for Children partners with David Ragan and Front Row Motorsports – ESPN
Posted: Published on May 22nd, 2017
Warmer weather and time off from school can mean an increase in serious accidents for children, but Shriners Hospitals for Children is trying to change that with the help of Front Row Motorsports (FRM) and David Ragan. A nationwide program encourages kids to be Superheroes of Summer Safety and to #EarnYourCape by following tips to reduce the risk of injuries during the summer months. FRM and Ragan will do their part to spread the message by entering a Shriners Hospitals for Children Ford Fusion this summer into two Monster Energy NASCAR Cup races. Today, Ragan, Shriners Hospitals for Children and students of the Harrisburg Elementary School in Harrisburg, N.C., unveiled the livery of the No. 38 Ford that Ragan will race at Michigan International Speedway on June 18 and Sonoma Raceway on June 25. Shriners Hospital for Children will be on the #38 at Michigan and Sonoma. Image from Front Row Motorsports Twitter.Front Row Motorsports Ragan will also visit various Shriners Hospitals during the summer to speak to children about how to stay safe and avoid swimming-related incidents, playground accidents, campfire and fire pit burns and more common and potentially life-altering childhood injuries that can occur during this time of … Continue reading

Names I will never forget – The Hippocratic Post (blog)
Posted: Published on May 22nd, 2017
As a nurse, there are some patients whose names I will never forget, as they have taught me something about the human body: Jane, whose now-healed, once-fungating wounds showed me the marvel of human skin; Rita, whose rare brain tumour showed me the complexity of disease, and James, the head-injury patient left for dead on the road, who is now running marathons for charity. But what about those who suffered some terrible disease or accident, and, as a consequence, changed the face of medicine, helping us better understand the nature of human health and disease and develop treatments that have saved millions of lives? Lets consider the gritty details behind some of the greatest medical advances in history, and remember the names of the patients whose beneficiaries we are. Lest we forget, here are the names of a few people, who in death or disaster left a legacy of learning. Henrietta Lacks immortal cells that have driven all areas of medical research 1920-1951 A poor black woman from a tobacco farming family in Virginia, USA. She died of cervical cancer, but the tumour cells didnt die. To date they have been used in more than 60,000 medical research experiments, helping … Continue reading

Shriners Hospitals for Children helps kids be Superheroes of Summer Safety to avoid common injuries – PR Newswire (press release)
Posted: Published on May 22nd, 2017
"As a father and Shriner, I know that within seconds a fun-filled day can take a turn when an unexpected accident occurs," said Ragan. "Shriners Hospitals and I want to provide families with simple ways to reduce the risk of childhood injuries so that kids can enjoy a safe summer." With the help of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN), over 175,000 printed safety materials have been distributed to kids and families since March, raising awareness in time for summer break. "We understand school nurses are the foundation for student health," said Chris Smith, chairman of the Board of Directors for Shriners Hospitals for Children. "Providing them with additional resources to help improve the health and safety of children is just another way we send Love to the rescue." As leaders in the treatment of pediatric orthopaedic conditions, spinal cord injuries, burns and cleft lip and palate, Shriners Hospitals for Children provides critical, surgical and rehabilitative care to children, regardless of the families' ability to pay. Shriners Hospitals for Children urges parents and caregivers to remind kids of these simple precautions to keep them injury-free this summer: Become a Superhero of Summer Safety and #EarnYourCape so you can enjoy … Continue reading

Annual ‘Walk to Believe’ is Can’t-Miss Event – Scout
Posted: Published on May 21st, 2017
The inspirational Eric LeGrand spoke with Scarlet Report about why A Walk to Believe is such an important part of his life. Not only is Rutgers icon Eric LeGranda believer, but the paralyzed former football player is a dreamer. While $32,000 raised from more than 300 donors toward spinal-cord research is an accomplishment, LeGrand envisions a day where towns close and fans flock to A Walk to Believe. A $125,000 donation is the goal as A Walk to Believe remains a must-participate event for Rutgers fans. As I continue to go through this now six-and-a-half years after my injury, I meet people that are spinal-cord injured, said LeGrand, whose injury took place in 2010 during a kickoff. There are more stories every day and the stories aren't going away. That's the sad part about it. That's why we need to find a cure for this, so everybody can be able to walk again. The 2017 Walk to Believe takes place Sunday, June 4at his former football home High Point Solutions Stadium. The annual event raises funds and awareness toward the research and treatment of spinal-cord injuries. Whether it be by organization or individual, LeGrand fans continue to make a difference. … Continue reading

Effect of intravesical botulinum toxin injection on symptoms of autonomic dysreflexia in a patient with chronic … – UroToday
Posted: Published on May 16th, 2017
There are few treatment options for managing autonomic dysreflexia in patients with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). According to some studies, intravesical botulinum toxin for SCI patients with autonomic dysreflexia has a preventive effect on symptoms of autonomic dysreflexia. However, the usefulness of an intravesical botulinum toxin injection has never been reported for autonomic dysreflexia in an adult patient with chronic cervical SCI, although there has been for one pediatric patient. A 62-year-old man with chronic cervical SCI had neurogenic bladder due to C6-7 SCI since sustaining a fall in 1980. He presented with an intermittent headache and severe hypertension because of persistent autonomic dysreflexia. His symptoms did not improve with conservative management, and he could not undergo an operation to resect the lung cancer because of his uncontrolled blood pressure. To control his fluctuating blood pressure, he was taken to an operating room to receive an intravesical botulinum toxin injection for refractory bladder spasms. Subsequently, his blood pressure was controlled, and then the lung mass could be surgically removed. His improved condition lasted for more than 6 months. This case suggests that botulinum toxin is a logical treatment option for autonomic dysreflexia as well as neurogenic detrusor overactivity in … Continue reading
