A Breakthrough in Stem Cell Treatment? – Equities.com
Posted: Published on February 18th, 2017
Asterias Biotherapeutics (AST) continues to generate excitement and buzz around its stem cell treatment for catastrophic spinal cord injury (SCI). I wrote about this historic event back in September. Thats when the company first released results about this transformative medical breakthrough. Asterias has now released follow-up data. This was gathered at six and nine months after six quadriplegics received treatment. All six continue to show improvement in motor function and sensation. This is truly wonderful news for those with SCI. There are also broader medical implications and these should be of great interest to investors. The difference between this stem cell therapy and traditional drug therapies is huge. Drug therapies have specific and mechanistic impacts. But stem cells derived from embryonic cells work a different way. They draw on the massive DNA databanks in their nuclei. They then use these genetic programs to interact with their surroundings and repair damaged structures. The Asterias oligodendrocyte progenitor cells were derived from a single unused embryo (from an IVF procedure in the late 1990s). Such embryos are often discarded. But this one was donated to create an unlimited number of therapeutic cells. Both the Bush and Obama Administrations approved the cell line. When … Continue reading

Spinal cord injury treated successfully using new drug – GroundReport
Posted: Published on February 16th, 2017
(1888 PressRelease) First successful spinal cord treatment using a non-invasive stem-cell topical drug. New York, NY The worlds first success in treating spinal cord injury sustained more than 40 years ago has been demonstrated using a new non-invasive drug. The treatment relies on a new formulation that creates stem cells deep below the skin using a highly-penetrating ointment. The drug is delivered using technology similar to that used in nicotine patches. TetraStem is a new tetracycline-based topical antibiotic that is FDA registered to treat cuts and burns. It was discovered 5 years ago that, as a new off-label drug, it also can induce stem-cell healing; first in an animal research program followed by human research programs. Older spinal cord injuries have been notoriously impossible to treat. Paraplegics and quadraplegics have tended to remain paraplegics and quadraplegics. Now, what was impossible may become possible using this new stem-cell drug. Good results have been obtained after treatment of a spinal cord injury sustained 42 years ago. The research methodology and case study results are online at http://www.PhillipsCompany.4T.com/SCAR.pdf The new treatment is the worlds first low-cost treatment for spinal cord injury. Hospitalization is not required because the non-invasive stem-cell drug can be applied … Continue reading

Report: Paralysis isn’t only impediment to spinal cord injury recovery 10 takeaways – Becker’s Orthopedic & Spine
Posted: Published on February 16th, 2017
A study by Chicago-based Loyola University Health System researchers has found that spinal cord patients are plagued by many different types of ailments after injury. Here are 10 things you should know: 1. Spinal cord injuries make patients more vulnerable to cardiovascular disease; pneumonia; life-threatening blood clots; bladder, bowel and sexual dysfunction; gastrointestinal problems such as constipation; pressure ulcers and chronic pain, according to the report. 2. Of all spinal cord injuries: 3. Mortality is highest in the first year after injury among patients with severe injuries, and life expectancy has failed to improve in the past 30 years. 4. Causes of spinal cord injuries vary: 46 percent are caused by motor vehicle accidents 5. Spinal cord injury patients will pay between $320,000 and $985,000 for first-year treatment and around $5 million during their lifetime. 6. Pneumonia and other pulmonary problems are the most common systemic complications following spinal cord injuries, but cardiovascular disease is the most likely to cause death. The initial injury's severity impacts the severity of the ailment that follows. 7. Deep vein thrombosis occurs in 47 percent to 90 percent of spinal cord patients while pulmonary embolism occurs in 20 percent to 50 percent of patients. … Continue reading

Community rallying for boy injured in car crash – Valley morning Star
Posted: Published on February 15th, 2017
LOS FRESNOS It was supposed to be a normal day. Steven Pena, 8, had just finished his day at school and was picked up by his mother. He strapped himself into the seat and was excited about his afternoon with his family. They were on their way to the doctors office for his sisters normal therapy session. But soon after leaving Laureles Elementary a sports utility vehicle veered into their lane and crashed into their car. The crash happened about 4:45 p.m. Feb. 6 when an early-model gray Chevrolet Tahoe collided with his mothers Hyundai Accent near the intersection of FM 803 and Iowa Gardens Road. The driver of the Tahoe fled the scene on foot. Investigators said yesterday they had no updates on the case or the whereabouts of the driver. The crash left Steven suffering from a severe spinal cord injury and organ damage. Since then, Steven has raised nearly $10,000 with a GoFundMe account. Doctors told us that he had a 50/50 chance of survival, said Gilberto Puente, 26, Stevens cousin. But through their hard work and Gods grace, they were able to stabilize Steven by stopping all the internal bleeding. Steven was later transported to a … Continue reading

Snowmobile athlete Colten Moore suffers spinal cord injury – The Denver Post
Posted: Published on February 10th, 2017
Snowmobiler Colten Moore suffered a spinal cord injury attempting a double backflip at the X Games last month. The seven-time snowmobile X Games medalist from Texas was rushed to an Aspen hospital Jan. 29, after overrotating the trick, which would have been the first in X Games history. The 27-year-old then was flown to a Denver hospital, where surgeons performed emergency surgery on his back to repair a dislocated T-12 vertebra. But the dislocation bruised his spinal cord. Daniel Petty, The Denver Post Moore, whose brother Caleb suffered a fatal injury during a snowmobile freestyle contest at the X Games in 2013, has been up and walking with the help of his care team, according to a statement released Tuesday. However, due to the injuries suffered, there are some complications and hell need to go to a rehabilitation center specializing in spinal cord injuries. Unfortunately, the costs involved with such a rehabilitation center are extremely high and insurance will not agree to send him to the private facility, readthe release from the Road 2 Recovery Foundation, which has set up a website seeking donations to help fund Moores recovery. Colten has a great team of rehab specialists waiting for him … Continue reading

Yes There’s Hope, But Treating Spinal Injuries With Stem Cells Is Not A Reality Yet – IFLScience

The 2017 Australian of the Year award went to Professor Alan Mackay-Sim for his significant career in stem cell science. The prize was linked to barbeque-stopping headlines equating his achievements to the scientific equivalent of the moon landing and paving the road to recovery for people with spinal cord injuries. Such claims in the media imply that there is now a scientifically proven stem cell treatment for spinal cord injury. This is not the case. For now, any clinic or headline claiming miracle cures should be viewed with caution, as they are likely to be trading on peoples hope. Why stem cells for spinal cord injury? Put simply, injury to the spinal cord causes damage to the nerve cells that transmit information between the brain and the rest of the body. Depending on which part of the spine is involved, the injury can affect the nerves that control the muscles in our legs and arms; those that control bowel and bladder function and how we regulate body temperature and blood pressure; and those that carry the sensation of being touched. This occurs in part because injury and subsequent scarring affect not just the nerves but also the insulation that surrounds … Continue reading

Greg Iger/Keck Medicine of USC Kristopher Boesen, who broke his neck in a car accident, regained the ability to move his arms and hands after his spinal cord was injected with stem cells. Two years after having a stroke at 31, Sonia Olea Coontz remained partially paralysed on her right side. She could barely move her arm, had slurred speech and needed a wheelchair to get around. In 2013, Coontz enrolled in a small clinical trial. The day after a doctor injected stem cells around the site of her stroke, she was able to lift her arm up over her head and speak clearly. Now she no longer uses a wheelchair and, at 36, is pregnant with her first child. Coontz is one of stem-cell therapy's miracle patients, says Gary Steinberg, chair of neurosurgery at Stanford School of Medicine in California, and Coontz's doctor. Conventional wisdom said that her response was impossible: the neural circuits damaged by the stroke were dead. Most neuroscientists believed that the window for functional recovery extends to only six months after the injury. Stem-cell therapies have shown great promise in the repair of brain and spinal injuries in animals. But animal models often behave differently … Continue reading
