Traffic accidents account for 61% of spinal cord injuries

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2014

Traffic accidents are the leading cause of spinal cord injuries (SCI) in Saudi Arabia and a study predicts that medical costs to treat 50,000 cases of undiagnosed patients may reach SR25 billion by 2020. The national study conducted by Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) was submitted at the International Conference for Detecting Spinal Cord Injuries. Sultan bin Abdulaziz Humanitarian City (SAHC) organized the event in Riyadh. The survey, covering various regions, was carried out by specialists for 3,740 cases over the past five years. The study showed that traffic accidents accounted for 61 percent of spinal cord injuries, which contribute to the occurrence of quadriplegia. The other causes of spinal cord injuries were sports-related (0.77 percent) and work-related (1.31 percent). The Central Province topped these injuries by 46 percent, followed by the Western Province (26 percent), Eastern Province (13 percent), Southern Province (8 percent) and Northern Province (7 percent). The study showed that among the injuries caused by traffic accidents, 63 percent of the cases were due to overturning of the vehicle, 26 percent due to collision with cars and 4 percent due to car-camel collisions. The study revealed that only 32 percent of the accident victims used … Continue reading

Regents OK Neural Injury Center at University of Montana

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2014

After discussing the duplication of programs on college campuses across Montana, the state Board of Regents on Friday gave the University of Montana the go-ahead to establish a Neural Injury Center. UM President Royce Engstrom, joined by professors Reed Humphrey and Richard Bridges, briefed regents on the centers goals to alleviate any fears the program would duplicate efforts taking place at Montana State University. The concept of the NIC was to take the services we currently have and leverage the pockets of expertise we have across campus, said Humphrey, chair of the School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences. Id like to think that while the center is located at UM, its still a Montana University System program. Through our collaboration, it will lead to better practices on all campuses. As billed to regents, the NIC would reach across disciplines to pool the universitys expertise and serve students suffering from brain, spinal cord and other neural injuries. It also would serve as an extension to the schools Brain Initiative. Early visions for the center look to help students, particularly military veterans, overcome their neural injuries and matriculate through college. The center would also boost professional training to improve treatment of … Continue reading

Spinal-cord crusader hopeful – Winnipeg Free Press

Winnipeg Free Press - PRINT EDITION By: Larry Kusch Posted: 03/5/2014 1:00 AM | Comments: It's been four decades since a 15-year-old Rick Hansen was thrown from the back of a pickup truck and suffered a serious spinal-cord injury that would leave him bound to a wheelchair. In that time, Hansen, famous for his Man in Motion World Tour and charitable foundation, has seen great advances in research and treatment that give him hope that someone suffering a similar injury will someday enjoy a better fate. "My belief is -- and the reason I'm engaged in this work -- is to hope that the legacy for the next generation of newly injured... is that they will walk again," he said in Winnipeg Tuesday. Hansen was on hand as the Manitoba government renewed its commitment to funding local spinal-cord research and patient support for another five years. Health Minister Erin Selby said the province would provide $3 million over the next five years. The money continues work that's been going on since 2008. "When I was injured, it took hours for the paramedics to arrive and to medevac me out to a local rural (B.C.) hospital," Hansen said. After several hospital … Continue reading

March 05, 2014 Imagine a future with no sporting events for paralysed people. A future in which there is no need, as all the would-be competitors will have been cured. This scenario, laughable just a few decades ago, is no longer far-fetched, experts say. Bit by bit, important progress is being made in understanding and tackling aspects of paralysis. Some believe the time is fast approaching when the major secondary problems from paralysis bowel, bladder and sexual dysfunction, breathing complications, declining muscle tone and bone density will be treatable, probably through a combination of drugs, cell replacement, physical training and electronic aids. And tentative but encouraging signs are emerging in the quest for the ultimate goal: restoring function to paralysed limbs. "This is an enormously complicated, but we do believe solvable, problem," said Susan Howley, vice-president of research at the New Jersey-based Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation for paralysis. "Some of the best and brightest people in neurosciences are thinking about spinal cord injury repair, and working on it. There is tremendous hope," she told AFP. Paralysis, full or partial, happens when a message from the brain gets lost on its way to the muscles, blocked by illness or damage … Continue reading

March 4, 2014|2:09 am Daniel Black was riding his bike to work one morning in December 2009 when a car hit him. He was severely hurt and placed in an induced coma for six weeks to minimize brain damage. When he awoke, the news was devastating. Broken spine resulting in spinal cord injury. Paralysis in three limbs. On the day of his accident, he was only three days from achieving his dream of joining the British army. He was an accomplished bass player in a band. Now doctors told him he'd never walk again. Upon hearing that an innovative stem cell treatment might help him walk, Black's family raised over 22,000 over $36,000 to help fund it. However, not even a penny of it went to his miracle cure, all because of a little boy named Brecon. Brecon Vaughan was born with cerebral palsy, and his only chance of walking was a 60,000 ($100,000) procedure in the … Continue reading

Here are a few of the most common diseases of the nervous system treated by Dr. Zampella and ANS: Vagal nerve stimulators (VNS) The most profound treatment for epilepsy is vagal nerve stimulators (VNS). This is an augmentative therapy, performed by implanting a device into the body to improve the function of the nervous system. This procedure involves a pacemaker-type implantation with an electrode that is used to essentially pace patients out of … Continue reading

A CAMPAIGN to help Warrnambools Bryn Murfett recover from a severe spinal injury has captured the communitys heart. In just over four months it has raised $50,000 for rehabilitation equipment for Bryn, who was paralysed after a road accident in Thailand last year. His family now hopes stem cell treatment could get Bryn walking again. The 4Byrn Appeal will hold a large auction next month to raise another $50,000. His brother Rohan Murfett has helped chair the appeal and says its supporters have been humbled by the help thats come forward. Already donations have been enough for a wheelchair, a special rehabilitation bike and modifications around the house. Were now looking … Continue reading
