CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- OncoMed Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a privately held, clinical-stage company developing novel therapeutics that target cancer stem cells (CSCs), or tumor-initiating cells, today highlighted new data for vantictumab, a monoclonal antibody targeting the Wnt pathway, at a poster session at the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago, IL. Vantictumab is a first-in-class antibody that has broad anti-cancer stem cell and anti-tumor activity in patient-derived xenograft tumor models. The presentation at ASCO (Abstract 2540), entitled First-in-human evaluation of the human monoclonal antibody vantictumab (OMP-18R5; anti-Frizzled) targeting the Wnt pathway in a Phase I study for patients with advanced solid tumors, was the first clinical presentation of this novel agent. Dr. David Smith (University of Michigan Cancer Center at Ann Arbor, MI) presented the data on behalf of the other principal investigators (Dr. Lee Rosen at the University of California, Los Angeles, CA, and Dr. Kyriakos Papadopoulos at The START Center for Cancer Care, San Antonio, TX) and the entire study team. Researchers from the Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine in Edinburgh have been granted a licence to make blood from stem cells that can be tested on humans. The licence from the UK's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency will allow scientists at SCRM to attempt to manufacture blood on an industrial scale. The research is designed to help to tackle shortages and stop the transfer of infections from blood donors. The trials on humans will be the first stage in establishing more large-scale clinical trials and could result in regular use of synthetic blood. Researchers will use stem cells from adult donors - known as induced pluripotent stem cells - as part of this project instead of the more controversial embryotic ones. According to the report, a single injection of human stem cells was able to induce neuronal regeneration and improved mobility in rats that were afflicted with a severe spinal cord injury. This is exciting, especially because, historically, there has been very little to offer patients with acute spinal cord injury, said co-author Dr. Joseph Ciacci, chief of neurosurgery for the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System. The research team observed as the injected rats regained motor skills and experienced a loss of the uncontrollable muscle spasms typically associated with traumatic spinal cord injury.The stem cell therapy also improved the integrity of the spine, allowing for signals to pass through the injury location. (CNN) -- Dr. Roberto Bolli's face lights up when he talks about his true love: the human heart. "The heart is really a miraculous organ. It beats 72 times a minute throughout our life, which means billions of times in our lifetime. And it never gets tired," Bolli says. "It knows exactly how much blood to pump; it can increase its output by fivefold if we need more oxygen -- for example, if we're running or doing strenuous activity. You have 5 billion cells called myocites, all beating in synchrony, in a perfectly coordinated manner, to maximize the heart's pumping ability.
