Research to Prevent Blindness, Inc. and the International Retinal Research Foundation Announce Catalyst Awards for AMD …

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise New York, New York Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB), the leading eye research foundation, is partnering with the International Retinal Research Foundation (IRRF) to advance knowledge about age-related macular degeneration (AMD) through novel stem cell research. RPB/IRRF & RPB Sybil B. Harrington Catalyst Awards for Stem Cell Research Approaches for Age-Related Macular Degeneration (the Catalyst Awards) have been given to three leading researchers. Each will receive $250,000 over four years. Research related to both dry and wet forms of AMD is supported by these awards. Said RPB President Brian F. Hofland, PhD: The concept for these partnership grants evolved out of a significant gift that we received from an anonymous donor who wanted us to focus on stem cell research and AMD. It came with the condition that we would find matching funding. We found a valuable partner in the International Retina Research Foundation very quickly for two of the awards, and one we matched with bequest money that we received from the Sybil Harrington Estate a generous family that is committed to health-related research on several fronts. We are especially encouraged that this all came together at a key time in … Continue reading

Research: NFL athletes are seeking unproven stem cell treatments

Posted: Published on December 5th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 4-Dec-2014 Contact: David Ruth david@rice.edu 713-348-6327 Rice University @RiceUNews Some National Football League (NFL) players have been seeking out unproven stem cell therapies to help accelerate recoveries from injuries, according to a new paper from Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy. While most players seem to receive treatment within the United States, several have traveled abroad for therapies unavailable domestically and may be unaware of the risks involved, the paper found. The paper is published in the 2014 World Stem Cell Report, which is a special supplement to the journal Stem Cells and Development and is the official publication of the 2014 World Stem Cell Summit being held Dec. 3-5 in San Antonio. "With the rise of new and unproven stem cell treatments, the NFL faces a daunting task of trying to better understand and regulate the use of these therapies in order to protect the health of its players," said Kirstin Matthews, the Baker Institute fellow in science and technology policy and an expert on ethical and policy issues related to biomedical research and development. She co-authored the paper with Maude Rowland Cuchiara, the Baker Institute scholar for science and technology policy. Each year, more … Continue reading

Scientists, Nobel Laureates convene in SA for World Stem Cell Summit

NEWS Patients, their families also in attendance to remind scientists why their work matters Posted YESTERDAY, 5:28 PM Updated YESTERDAY, 5:30 PM SAN ANTONIO - Among the Nobel Laureates, scientists and fundraisers, some patients and their families are attending the 10th-Annual World Stem Cell Summit at the Marriott Rivercenter to remind the great minds what is at stake in their groundbreaking work. Roman Reed is wheeling around as fast as he can in his old, scratched and dirty wheelchair. Paralyzed in 1994 in a football accident, he was instrumental in getting "Romans Law" passed, which paved the way for stem cell research for paralysis patients. He said he is not buying another wheelchair because he feels he will not need it in the future. "We will have a cure. I will walk again, and so shall 5.6 million Americans," he said. Reed said even if you are not in a wheelchair and do not know anyone who is, you should still be concerned with the costs associated with people like himself, noting we spend $1.65 trillion a year in health care costs for paralyzed Americans. He won the Inspiration Award at last years World Stem Cell Summit, and continues to … Continue reading

Researchers Recreate Pain-Sensing Neurons

Posted: Published on December 1st, 2014

Researchers at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and the Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology Department have successfully developed pain-sensing neurons from mouse and human skin cells, according to a report published in Nature Neuroscience in late November. The study specifically aimed to simulate primary afferent nociceptors, very specialized pain-sensing neurons. According to head researcher Clifford J. Woolf, a professor of Neurology and Neurobiology at theMedical School, the findings may lead to development of more effective pain medications, better methods to evaluate who is at risk for developing chronic pain, and ways to combat pain complications resulting from cancer chemotherapy. What weve been able to do with stem cell technology for the first time is recreate some of the key elements of the nervous system by taking one cell and turning it into a particular other cell, Woolf said. This enables us for the first time to really dissect how human neurons function in the nervous system. For Woolf, the study is a culmination of many years of research, previously done only in mouse cells. The fact that we can even create these cells with a human gives us the opportunity to study the mechanisms of the way human nervous systems … Continue reading

Research findings offer hope for treating Alzheimers

Posted: Published on November 30th, 2014

Dr. Charles P. Gennaula reviews a patients file with certified nurse practitioner Patty Zamiska in his office in Belle Vernon. Photo By:Jim McNutt/Observer-Reporter Marlene Oreski said she welcomes breakthrough research this year by Harvard stem-cell scientists, something that offers hope for treating Alzheimers disease. But it wouldnt benefit her mother. It certainly is good news, said Marlene, a retired Carroll Township schoolteacher, in response to news in March that the researchers, Tracy Young-Pearse and Christina Muratore, had created the types of neurons that are damaged by the disease from skin cells of patients with early-onset Alzheimers. Marlene said her mother, Helen Oreski, 93, was diagnosed with dementia more than a year ago, and its symptoms have worsened to the point where she now has problems with mobility and recognizing her relatives. It would be too late for her, Marlene said, speaking of any better dementia or Alzheimers medication that could come out of new research findings. The Harvard study could lead to developing improved treatment regimens for Alzheimers before those who are at risk for the disease begin to exhibit its symptoms, much like how physicians treat heart disease early with high blood pressure medication, said Eric McDade, a UPMC … Continue reading

Obokata to wrap up STAP cell reproduction bid

Posted: Published on November 30th, 2014

Discredited stem-cell biologist Haruko Obokata will end her attempts to reproduce so-called STAP cells on Sunday as scheduled, officials at the Riken research institute said. The young scientist is attempting to prove that the cells, which are purportedly capable of developing into any type of body tissue, actually exist after studies published by her team were discredited by allegations of research misconduct. She and her co-authors later retracted two research papers on stimulus-triggered acquisition of pluripotency that had been published in the British science journal Nature. The state-backed institute plans to disclose the results of her tests after compiling the data but has not decided when to release them because it is not known how long it will take to interpret the data, the officials said Friday. Obokata will organize and analyze the data under the supervision of other researchers, including the leader of a Riken team that is attempting to reproduce the fabled cells, the officials said. In August, the team said in an interim report that it had not yet succeeded. Obokata has joined the research team to conduct, with a third party present, experiments that are set to be terminated at the end of this month, regardless … Continue reading
