Germantown's Next Healthcare pairs with NFL player

Company plans for the future of stem cell use by Samantha Schmieder Staff Writer Next Healthcare Inc. of Germantown recently launched a partnership with Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald to promote its newest venture, CelBank Pro to other professional athletes. Next Healthcares CelBank is the collection of cell samples and storage of their blood, skin or stem cells to be used in the future. Stem cells are unspecialized cells that are able to renew themselves through cell division and can be scientifically manipulated to become another type of cell with a more specialized function. They offer hope to provide new ways to fight disease or injuries, according to the National Institutes of Health. Essentially we are in the business of banking cells for people, Vin Singh, the founder and CEO of Next Healthcare, said. While CelBank is geared toward anyone interested in using their own cells later in their life, CelBank Pro is geared toward sports players who are very likely to get injured or just worn down during their career. Skin cells and stem cells are stored at a healthy time at someones life for later use in regenerative medicine, Singh said. In 2006 and 2007, Singh, who … Continue reading

Research and Markets: Global and Chinese Stem Cell …

Posted: Published on September 22nd, 2014

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/lwmtdr/global_and) has announced the addition of the "Global and Chinese Stem Cell Industry Report, 2014-2017" report to their offering. Currently, cord blood bank is the fastest-growing and relatively mature market amid stem cell upstream sectors and even the whole industry chain. In 2005, there were 23 cord blood banks worldwide and in 2013 the figure exceeded 480. Global cord blood stem cell (CBSC) storage companies can be roughly divided into two categories: the ones running in a globalized business model, such as Cryo-Cell International and Esperite (formerly known as Cryo-Save Group), and the others giving priority to regional operation e.g. Zhongyuan Union Stem Cell Bioengineering (VCANBIO), Golden Meditech and LifeCell International. However, the companies mainly engaged in cord blood bank business are currently small in scale, only a few with more than 500,000 clients. The stem cell technology and product research-oriented midstream sector is in its infancy, mostly concentrated in few countries like Europe, America and South Korea. At present, most companies in the industry chain are basically in the red for years running due to huge R&D costs. Nevertheless, attracted by the tremendous market potential in the area of stem cell therapy and enjoying the … Continue reading

Ageing of Australia's scientists creating a void in nation's future research workforce

Posted: Published on September 19th, 2014

Funding discrimination: Professor Alan Trouson warns Australia faces a catastrophe if we neglect our young scientists. Photo: Angela Wylie The pioneering Australian IVF and stem cell scientist Alan Trounson has warned of a "catastrophic event" in Australian science unless more is done to support early career scientists and prevent them leaving research in droves. The system of awarding public money to researchers disproportionately funds older, more established scientists over early and mid-career researchers, who are less experienced but are the country's future science leaders and medical experts. "We'll lose generations of really top young people if we don't correct it, and those are the young people who are going to win all of those Nobel prizes in the future," said Professor Trounson, a former Australian of the Year who recently returned to Melbourne after seven years leading California's $3 billion Institute of Regenerative Medicine. Advertisement "That's a catastrophic event for Australia," he said. The problem was particularly evident in biological and medical research. Never before released figures show the average age of lead investigators awarded funding for research projects from the National Health and Medical Research Council, the main funding body for medical research, has increased by nine years over … Continue reading

Story Dispels Myths About Stem Cell Research

Posted: Published on September 19th, 2014

By Guest Contributor on September 18th, 2014 Editor, I want to personally thank you for the wonderful art review on The Art of Stem Cells being held at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Arts (OCCCA) in Santa Ana. Such a glowing review by your art critic, Daniella Walsh, who is held in the highest of esteem by OC artists. The subject of stem cell research is controversial and a show such as this one, gives the viewer a chance to better understand the role of stem cell research and dispel some of the myths about the research. Basically, stem cell research is about how stem cells can replace diseased cells in the body with regenerated healthy ones. Twenty-eight artists made conceptual art pieces after meeting with 22 UC Irvine researchers and visiting their laboratories at the Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Center on the UCI campus. The result was to help educate the public through visual art about the treatments and cures that are at hand with the use of stem cells. I wanted to bring recognition to these dedicated scientist who have given a lifetime commitment to finding cures and fighting against human suffering. Thank you for … Continue reading

Hauser and Horizon back Axol with near 1m new cash

Posted: Published on September 18th, 2014

Cambridge UK stem cell technology startup Axol Bioscience has secured 800,000 in new equity funding bringing on board an elite team of heavy-hitters in the life-science investment world. Dr Hermann Hauser, a Cambridge and Silicon Valley entrepreneurial great, and angel funder Dr Darrin Disley CEO of personalised medicines front runner Horizon Discovery are among the industry heavyweights who have piled into the round. The funding will be used to diversify the companys products and expand its marketing capabilities. Axol produces a range of human cells and tissues from induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells - a type of stem cell derived from easily-obtained blood or skin cells. The iPS cells are used in the testing of new drug compounds as well as in the development of therapies for diseases such as Alzheimers, which affects 24 million people worldwide. Axol launched its iPS cell-derived neural progenitor cells and neurons in 2013 and has already won contracts to provide its cellular platforms to academic pharmaceutical and biotech research bodies, including Harvard, Cambridge and Oxford Universities, Genentech, Janssen and Takeda Pharmaceuticals. The company, already regarded as a global authority on iPS cell-derived research, is felt to hold significant market advantage as its production methods … Continue reading
