Stem Cells: Promises and Reality

Posted: Published on July 23rd, 2014

Renowned Israeli stem-cell researcher in Fairfield Aug. 6 By Cindy Mindell Dr. Yaqub Hanna A leading Israeli scientist who has pioneered groundbreaking stem-cell reprogamming research will discuss his work on Wednesday, Aug. 6 at Jewish Senior Services in Fairfield. Together with a team of researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science Department of Molecular Genetics in Rehovot, Israel, Dr. Jacob (Yaqub) Hanna has overcome a major roadblock in the use of human stem cells for medical purposes. Funded by a grant from the Israel Cancer Research Fund, their pioneering breakthrough was recently published in the peer-reviewed international science journal, Nature. Its not only Hannas work that is note-worthy: the award-winning research scientist is a Palestinian living in Israel, a native of Kafr Rama in the Galilee and the son of two medical doctors. Hanna earned a BS in medical sciences summa cum laude in 2001, an MS in microbiology and immunology in 2003, and a PhD-MD in immunology summa cum laude in 2007, all from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he was among the top five percent of all Israeli medical-school graduates. After completing his PhD, Hanna decided to abandon clinical medicine and focus on research, and spent four … Continue reading

3-D printed tissues advance stem cell research

Posted: Published on July 22nd, 2014

Tissue engineering and vascular biology expert Guohao Dai, assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, recently won a Faculty Early Career Development Award (CAREER) from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Dai will use the five-year, $440,000 grant to advance his research into bio-fabricating human tissues with 3-D cell printing technology. Adult neural stem cells are known to hold a great potential for treating disease and damage to the nervous system. However, these cells are both rare and difficult to use in a laboratory setting. The cells lose their potency quickly upon being removed from their native environment, making it difficult to study them. With his CAREER Award, Dai seeks to design and develop a new way of using 3-D cell printing technology to create a "vascular niche" that replicates the native environment of adult neural stem cells. With the ability to prolong the potency of the cells and precisely control the parameters and components of its vascular niche, researchers would be better positioned to study the cells and their role in treating treat spinal cord injury and neurodegenerative diseases. "Adult neural stem cells hold so much promise for treating injury and disease, but they are … Continue reading

Lung Center justifies P70-M DAP fund, says went to 4 key departments besides stem cell research

Posted: Published on July 19th, 2014

InterAksyon.com The online news portal of TV5 MANILA - The Lung Center of the Philippines (LCP) has justified the P70-million allocation it received through the controversial Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) for stem cell research, saying that as the only tertiary pulmonary specialty hospital in the Philippines, it should take the lead, not only in cutting edge treatment but also in advocacies. The DAP-funded equipment dubbed by critics as untested and expensive were also used, according to LCP executive director Jose Luis Danguilan, for other purposes in four other key departments of the hospital. The specialty hospital based in Quezon City actually got P105 million through DAP in 2012 of which P70 million went to the Bio-regenerative Program and P35 million for the Pediatric Unit. To spend the money wisely, it was decided that pieces of equipment needed for the Bioregenerative Program and the Pediatric Unit could also be used by the Department of Pathology and Laboratory, the Department of Thoracic Surgery and Surgery, the Department of Pulmonary Medicine and the Department of Radiology, he added. Earlier, Philippine College of Physician president Anthony Leachon criticized the decision to allocate funds for stem cell therapy, describing it as an untested , expensive … Continue reading

International Stem Cell Corporation Should Win EU Patent Case

Posted: Published on July 18th, 2014

The European Union Court of Justice will likely agree that stem cells can be patented, setting a new precedent for scientists to use this controversial method for research and development. This is an extremely important case with industry-wide consequences, Dr. Simon Craw, of the International Stem Cell Corporation, the American biotech company at the center of the case. The California-based firm applied for two patents on the technology it uses to produce stem cells but was rejected. European Union laws dictate that embryos cannot be patented on ethical grounds, because they can develop into humans. Technically, embryos are eggs that have been fertilized with human sperm. But ISC Corp. uses chemicals to activate the cells instead, which are then called parthenotes. EU Advocate General Pedro Cruz Villaln wrote in a Thursday opinion that since these cells cannot possibly develop into humans, they arent subject to the ethical laws that apply to human beings. Its a great day for scientific rationale with the Judge correctly recognizing the difference between human parthenogenesis and fertilization, Craw said. Three years ago, the EU court ruled against patents on discoveries that involve the stem cells, saying the use of human cells in this was immoral. … Continue reading

Gene Profiling Technique to Accelerate Stem Cell Therapies for Eye Diseases

Posted: Published on July 17th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Researchers at the National Institutes of Health have developed a technique that will speed up the production of stem-cell derived tissues. The method simultaneously measures the expression of multiple genes, allowing scientists to quickly characterize cells according to their function and stage of development. The technique will help the researchers in their efforts to use patients skin cells to regenerate retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)a tissue in the back of the eye that is affected in several blinding eye diseases. It will also help the scientists search for drugs for personalized treatments. Progress in stem cell-based therapies has been limited by our capacity to authenticate cells and tissues, said Kapil Bharti, Ph.D., a Stadtman Investigator in the Unit on Ocular and Stem Cell Translational Research at the National Eye Institute (NEI), a part of NIH. This assay expands that capacity and streamlines the process. The assay was described in a recent issue of Stem Cells Translational Medicine. The RPE is a single layer of cells that lies adjacent to the retina, where the light-sensitive photoreceptors commonly called rods and cones are located. The RPE supports photoreceptor function. Several diseases cause the RPE to … Continue reading

(PINKSHEETS: ENTB) announced today that Dr. Christine Ichim has joined the Company as Its Director of Research.Dr. Ichim was previously with the Salk Institute where she conducted research in the areas of cancer and stem cell division, cell senescence and aging. While at the University of Toronto, Dr. Ichim began developing research for the treatment of feline leukemia.Dr. Ichim has published her research in peer reviewed journals on immunological therapies for treating cancer.David Koos, Chairman & CEO of Entest BioMedical Inc. noted, "Dr. Ichim has a unique approach to treating leukemia and cancer. She is focused on cell senescence of cancer stem cells. This approach involves forcing cells that would normally become cancerous into a state of maturation where they no longer have the capacity to grow.Cancer cells typically have the ability to expand leading to life threatening conditions such as lung cancer. In this cell senescence approach, these cancer cells are no longer capable of expansion, thus rendering these cells harmless." Dr. Ichim stated, "I am extremely … Continue reading
