Blue Cross overturns decision, approves stem cell transplant coverage

Posted: Published on January 6th, 2015

GREENVILLE, Mich. Lori Mills has beenapproved to receive a stem cell transplant under her Blue Cross Blue Shield coverage. The insurance company has overturned its previous denial from the summer of 2014. In a letter dated January 2, 2015,Blue Cross states the company will now pay for the potentially life-changing procedure. I know its going to be a shot at a whole new life for me, Mills said today. She added,I know that because of our previous interview, it really helped get this approval letter because whenever I call they talk about it. FOX 17 alsointerviewed Mills in October, questioned Blue Cross, and aired her story. Shesuffers from chronicinflammatory demyelinating neuropathy or CIDP. Her immune system attacks her nervous system. She shakes, has numbness, and it impairs her movement. Doctors told her a stem cell transplant could be the cure. Watch the video for Mills story and what the insurance company had to say in its approval letter. Link: Blue Cross overturns decision, approves stem cell transplant coverage … Continue reading

Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation | The Leukemia …

Posted: Published on January 3rd, 2015

Allogeneic stem cell transplantation involves transferring the stem cells from a healthy person (the donor) to you after high-intensity chemotherapy or radiation. Allogeneic stem cell transplantation is used to cure some patients who: Allogeneic stem cell transplantation can be a high-risk procedure. The high-conditioning regimens are meant to severely or completely impair your ability to make stem cells. You may experience side effects during the days you receive high-dose conditioning radiation or chemotherapy. Specifically, high-conditioning therapy's goals are to: The immune system and the blood system are closely linked and can't be separated from each other. Because of this, allogeneic transplantation means that not only the donor's blood system but also his or her immune system is transferred. As a result, these adverse effects are possible: The immune reaction, or GVHD, is treated by giving drugs to the patient after the transplant to reduce the ability of the donated immune cells to attack and injure the patient's tissues. See Graft Versus Host Disease. Allogeneic stem cell transplants for patients who are older or have overall poor health are relatively uncommon. This is because the pretransplant conditioning therapy is generally not well tolerated by such patients, especially those with poorly functioning … Continue reading

Margot Martini's story can save lives with new charity

Posted: Published on January 2nd, 2015

A charity in memory of inspirational toddler Margot Martini is being set up by her family with the aim of getting more than one million extra people to sign up to the UK stem cell register. The Team Margot Foundation has the goal to get more than 1.5 million extra potential bone marrow donors to take the total to 2.5 million. The foundation will also raise money and support the work of five charities - Great Ormond Street Hospital Childrens Charity, Delete Blood Cancer UK, Anthony Nolan, Shooting Stars Chase, and Momentum. Two-year-old Margot died in October from two rare types of leukaemia following a worldwide search for a bone marrow donor. Margot's parents, Vicki, originally from Essington, and Yaser, went public in their search for a bone marrow donor to help save their daughter's life. Speaking exclusively to the Express & Star, Margot's father Yaser outlined plans for 2015 which will see Team Margot in full swing over the next 12 months. They include, establishing the Team Margot Foundation to support the work of charities close to their heart, holding the first annual international Team Margot Stem Cell and Bone Marrow Awareness Day, supporting bone marrow donor registration events … Continue reading

Donors needed to help replenish blood supply

Posted: Published on January 1st, 2015

A New Kensington mother is at her 9-year-old daughter's bedside at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh as she recovers from a stem cell transplant. Isabella Bella Carabin needed the procedure when the cancer that struck her at 10 months of age came back after eight years of remission. As Meredith Carabin, 32, keeps watch over Bella, she is keenly aware of not only her own child's need for blood, but the need of other children at the hospital this holiday season. Since her transplant on Dec. 19, Bella has needed large amounts of platelets the tiny, spiky cells that allow blood to clot when there's a cut or bruise and also red blood cells every day. We have been told multiple times there's a shortage, Meredith said. It's not by any means the fault of Children's Hospital or any health care institution. It's the fact people are not donating. There's always a need for blood during the holidays, said Tamara Kilgore, a spokeswoman for Central Blood Bank. The need for blood is constant so we can maintain the blood supply, she said. Donors are encouraged to schedule appointments. There is a particular need for platelets, which have a shorter shelf life … Continue reading

Autologous Stem Cell / Bone Marrow Transplant (AutoSCT)

The Oncologist: Less is More: The Role of Purging in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation "It is likely that the benefit of purging will be dependent upon the tumor type and stage of disease, as well as the degree of purging possible in the individual case. To date, most trials in which progression-free and overall survival have been evaluable have been in hematological malignancies. A six-year single center study showed no benefit of purging in patients with non-Hodgkins lymphoma [53], nor did a large study from EBMT [15]. " A stem cell transplant* may sometimes be medically necessary for patients with lymphomas. With a stem cell transplant, the stem cells** obtained from bone marrow, peripheral blood, or umbilical cord blood are given back to the patient following high dose treatment, which can damage or ablate (kill off) these vital cells. The engrafted stem cells can then restore bone marrow function** impaired or destroyed by the high dose conditioning therapy. A stem cell transplant is sometimes called a bone marrow transplant. * The terms stem cell transplant, infusion, rescue, … Continue reading

Report on remission in patients with MS 3 years after stem cell transplant

Posted: Published on December 30th, 2014

Three years after a small number of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) were treated with high-dose immunosuppressive therapy (HDIT) and then transplanted with their own hematopoietic stem cells, most of the patients sustained remission of active relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) and had improvements in neurological function, according to a study published online by JAMA Neurology. MS is a degenerative disease and most patients with RRMS who received disease-modifying therapies experience breakthrough disease. Autologous (using a patient's own cells) hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) has been studied in MS with the goal of removing disease-causing immune cells and resetting the immune system, according to the study background. The Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation for Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (HALT-MS) study examines the effectiveness of early intervention with HDIT/HCT for patients with RRMS and breakthrough disease. The article by Richard A. Nash, M.D., of the Colorado Blood Cancer Institute at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center, Denver, and coauthors reports on the safety, efficacy and sustainability of MS disease stabilization though three years after the procedures. Patients were evaluated through five years. Study results indicate that of the 24 patients who received HDIT/HCT, the overall rate of event-free survival was 78.4 percent at three years, which was defined as … Continue reading
