Japan carries out first iPS stem cell retina surgery

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2014

TOKYO: Japanese researchers on Friday (Sep 12) conducted the world's first surgery to implant "iPS" stem cells in a human body in a major boost to regenerative medicine, two institutions involved said. A female patient in her 70s with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a common medical condition that can lead to blindness in older people, had a sheet of retina cells that had been created from iPS cells implanted. "It is the first time in the world that iPS cells have been transplanted into a human body," a spokeswoman for Riken, one of the research institutions, told AFP. The research team used induced Pluripotent Stem (iPS) cells - which have the potential to develop into any cell in the body - that had originally come from the skin of the patient. Until the discovery of iPS several years ago, the only way to obtain stem cells was to harvest them from human embryos. "We feel very much relieved," ophthalmologist Masayo Takahashi, the leader of the project at Riken, told a news conference after the surgery in Kobe. "We want to take it as a big step forward. But we must go on and on from here." In a statement, the … Continue reading

Study examines vitiligo, alopecia areata and chronic graft vs. host disease

Posted: Published on September 11th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 10-Sep-2014 Contact: NCI Press Officers ncipressofficers@mail.nih.gov 301-496-6641 The JAMA Network Journals @JAMA_current Vitiligo (depigmentation of the skin) and alopecia areata (AA, patchy or complete hair loss) in patients with chronic graft-vs-host disease (GvHD) following a stem cell transplant appear to be associated with having a female donor and the sex mismatch of a female donor and male recipient. GvHD is a frequent complication of donor stem cell transplants because donor cells can attack the recipient's body and cause death and other illnesses. The skin is the most commonly affected organ. The underlying biology of chronic GvHD has not been fully explained. The authors looked for laboratory markers, transplant-related and other factors associated with vitiligo and/or AA in patients with chronic GvHD. The study conducted by the NIH included 282 adult and pediatric patients with chronic GvHD seen under an NIH protocol between 2004 and 2013. A total of 15 patients (5.3 percent) from among 282 participants with vitiligo and/or AA were identified. The most common reasons for transplantation were types of leukemia. In the study group, a donor who is female, in particular a female donor and a male recipient sex mismatch, as well as the presence … Continue reading
