All aspects of my life have improved, said 28-year-old Dan Tiel, I dont even walk with a cane anymore. Tiel's mother first learned of the clinical trial at Northwestern University while doing research on Facebook. I had been searching for hope for 10 years and this was the first time I really felt it, Gina Tiel said. Dr. Richard Burt said about 80 patients a year are getting the stem cell transplants at Northwestern for a variety of autoimmune diseases. We give them their own stem cells that we collect from their blood and it regenerates a new immune system, he explained. Asian stem cell donors are rare in Quebec

Posted: Published on July 27th, 2014

MONTREAL Two months since she suffered a relapse of leukemia, Mai Duong still hasnt found a compatible stem cell donor, but her friends havent lost hope. A dozen volunteers from S.O.S. Mai and Hma-Qubec staff registered close to 200 people in a swab drive during the 2014 Dragon Boat Challenge at the Olympic Basin last weekend. Since July 1, Mais friends and family, as well as members of the Vietnamese community, have helped to sign up around 2,000 potential donors, half of whom are Asian. Of Vietnamese origin, Duong, 34, has been struggling to find a match because of the lack of Asian donors on Quebecs registry and worldwide. Only 0.5 per cent of donors in the province are of Asian descent, according to Hma-Qubec. Christiane Rochon, a colleague and friend of Duongs for almost 10 years, volunteered to collect swabs on Saturday. When youre sick, I think everyone should have the same chances of recovering, she said, but its not like that right now. If youre not white, youre doomed. Hma-Qubec has been searching international registries to arrange an umbilical cord or bone marrow stem cell transplant for Duong. The challenge with Mai is that Vietnam doesnt have its … Continue reading

Top journal retracts stem-cell study

Posted: Published on July 25th, 2014

Leading science journal Nature is withdrawing a stem-cell study published in January that had been hailed as a 'game-changer' in the quest to grow transplant tissue. The announcement on Wednesday came after mistakes were discovered in some data published in two papers, photograph captions were found to be misleading, and the work itself could not be repeated by other scientists, it said. 'All co-authors of both papers have finally concluded that they cannot stand behind the papers, and have decided to retract them,' the journal said in an editorial. Nature said it would tighten up procedures to vet future studies submitted for publication. On June 4, Japan's Riken research institute said lead scientist Haruko Obotaka, 30, had agreed to retract the papers after an investigation. Obokata was feted after unveiling findings that appeared to show a straight-forward way to reprogram adult cells to become stem cells - precursors that are capable of developing into any other cell in the human body. Identifying a readily-manufacturable supply of stem cells could one day help meet a need for transplant tissues, or even whole organs. WATCH:An 11-year-old girl with a rare blood disease is in need of a stem cell transplant ideally from a match within the South Asian Community. Angie Seth reports. Stem cell and bone marrow donations are critical for hundreds of people in Canada suffering from certain types of cancers or blood diseases. Right now there are approximately 800 people on the transplant list. Among them is 11-year-old Cierra Singh. Cierra has a rare blood disease calledMyelodysplastic Syndrome. Mybone marrow and my bones are not producing enough healthy cells. So there are platelets and the white blood cells and the red blood cells. My mom tells me they are not working as well as they should work, Cierra tells Global News. We had the opportunity to meet this incredible little girl who strives to give back to others in every which way. Everyone says its a big deal, but I dont see it as a big deal. I just try to stay positive all the time, she says. Cierra was diagnosed with the rare blood disease in April. A trip to Sick Kids hospital because of a swollen leg led doctors to discover Cierras immune system was not functioning properly. Her Mothers … Continue reading

Woman needs flight to Israel for stem cell transplant

Posted: Published on July 24th, 2014

NEW YORK (WABC) -- "Physically and emotionally, it's got to be tough for you," Eyewitness News reporter Stacey Sager said. "It's everything," said Jill Bevilacqua, a patient. It's everything because for Jill Bevilacqua, a new type of stem cell transplant could be a life changer. Her multiple sclerosis is now accelerating to the point where she can barely do things for herself. Three weeks ago, they learned that a trial procedure she'd have to wait for here in the states had suddenly reopened in Israel, but the violence was escalating. "We're determined to get there because I don't know when this will ever happen again for her," said Doreen Bevilacqua, Jill's mother. They were booked on a Delta flight to Tel Aviv Thursday, but the FAA has now extended their ban on U.S. commercial flights there. The news from Delta wasn't good when Jill's mom called. "Then this morning they told me there are no seats available, you're on a wait list," Doreen Bevilacqua said. El-Al tells Eyewitness News, that the truth is, they have plenty of seats. Stem cell drive to be held Sunday

Posted: Published on July 23rd, 2014

Published Jul 23, 2014 at 1:29 pm (Updated Jul 23, 2014) SPARTA On Sunday, July 27 there will be a stem cell drive from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Cassidy Hall at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Sparta. Erik Massenzio has organized the drive through "Be The Match" which is a national registry for patients who are searching for a donor in order to receive a stem cell transplant. His mother, Hedy Massenzio, who was in need of a donor due to a diagnosis of acute leukemia, received a life saving transplant ten years ago from a donor who was in the national registry. There are many misconceptions about stem cell, also known as bone marrow transplants, and part of the purpose of the drive is to educate potential donors of the procedure of donation. While many people still believe that surgery is involved, today the method of donation is primarily a simple blood donation at a local blood bank. '); //--> Signing up to be in the registry is very simple and quick. You must be between the ages of 18 to 44, and it only involves a self-administered inner cheek swab. Most people who are … Continue reading
