Albion Park man heads to Russia for risky op
Posted: Published on July 11th, 2014
July 11, 2014, 9 p.m. Multiple sclerosis sufferer Troy Eccleston will travel to Russia in September for risky but potentially life-saving treatment. Troy Eccleston, with fiancee Ainslie Sackey, is ready to go to Russia. Picture: SYLVIA LIBER Multiple sclerosis sufferer Troy Eccleston will travel to Russia in September for risky but potentially life-saving treatment. A controversial stem cell transplant is the last hope for the 47-year-old Albion Park Rail man whose symptoms have worsened in the last two years, leaving him confined to a wheelchair. Mr Eccleston was not eligible for a Sydney trial of haematopoietic stem cell transplantation due to his age and the advanced nature of his MS, but he has been accepted for treatment at the Pirogov Centre in Moscow. His fiancee Ainslie Sackey and family and friends are now busy fund-raising, with a target of $70,000 to pay for the 30-day treatment and associated transport costs. "Over the next two years it is expected I will grow a new immune system with no memory of MS." "The treatment involves injections to stimulate my bone marrow to release millions of stem cells, removing the cells and freezing them," Mr Eccleston said. "I will then be given large … Continue reading

Cancer sufferer Ulrika overwhelmed by stem cell donation offers
Posted: Published on July 9th, 2014
A young Solihull woman who is suffering from a rare type of cancer says she has been astonished by the amount of people who have come forward to try to help save her life. Ulrika Dandekar, aged 21, was recently given the devastating news that she has a rare type of blood cancer called Anaplastic Lymphoma. Her only hope is to find a stem cell transplant. After discovering her own family were not donor matches, Ulrika launched her own global search last week to find a stem cell from elsewhere. The Birmingham Mail revealed her plight and Ulrika said that since then she has been inundated with messages from people who have registered to become a possible match. I have been astonished by the amount of people who have said they have registered, people who I dont even know. I have been very overwhelmed, said Ulrika, who has launched her campaign to coincide with National Transplant Week. There is just one in 125,000 likelihood of Ulrika finding a match because of her Asian background. When you are in my position, desperately in need of a donor, and you are told the statistics its devastating, added Ulrika, who dreams of becoming … Continue reading

Some stem cell methods closer to 'gold standard' than others
Posted: Published on July 3rd, 2014
PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 2-Jul-2014 Contact: Kristina Grifantini press@salk.edu Salk Institute LA JOLLA-Researchers around the world have turned to stem cells, which have the potential to develop into any cell type in the body, for potential regenerative and disease therapeutics. Now, for the first time, researchers at the Salk Institute, with collaborators from Oregon Health & Science University and the University of California, San Diego, have shown that stem cells created using two different methods are far from identical. The finding could lead to improved avenues for developing stem cell therapies as well as a better understanding of the basic biology of stem cells. The researchers discovered that stem cells created by moving genetic material from a skin cell into an empty egg cell-rather than coaxing adult cells back to their embryonic state by artificially turning on a small number of genes-more closely resemble human embryonic stem cells, which are considered the gold standard in the field. "These cells created using eggs' cytoplasm have fewer reprogramming issues, fewer alterations in gene expression levels and are closer to real embryonic stem cells," says co-senior author Joseph R. Ecker, professor and director of Salk's Genomic Analysis Laboratory and co-director of the Center of … Continue reading

Flawed 'game-changing' stem-cell study withdrawn
Posted: Published on July 3rd, 2014
Wednesday 02 July 2014 14.29 Leading science journal Nature has withdrawn a flawed stem-cell study which was hailed as a "game-changer" in the quest to grow transplant tissue when it was published in January. The decision was taken after mistakes were discovered in some data published in two papers, photograph captions were found to be misleading, and the work itself could not be repeated by other scientists, it said. "All co-authors of both papers have finally concluded that they can not stand behind the papers, and have decided to retract them," the journal said in an editorial. The controversy is the biggest in scientific publishing in a decade. Nature said it would tighten procedures to vet future studies submitted for publication. On 4 June, Japan's Riken research institute said lead scientist Haruko Obokata had agreed to retract the papers after an investigation. Riken was "still discussing" a retraction with co-author Charles Vacanti of Harvard University, a spokeswoman said at the time. Ms Obokata was feted after unveiling findings that appeared to show a straight-forward way to reprogramme adult cells to become stem cells - precursors that are capable of developing into any other cell in the human body. Identifying a … Continue reading

Adults stop anti-rejection drugs after stem-cell transplant reverses sickle cell disease
Posted: Published on July 2nd, 2014
PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 1-Jul-2014 Contact: Krysten Carrera NIDDKMedia@mail.nih.gov 301-496-3583 NIH/National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases Adults stop anti-rejection drugs after stem-cell transplant reverses sickle cell disease NIH trial success suggests a new treatment option for older, sicker patients Half of patients in a trial have safely stopped immunosuppressant medication following a modified blood stem-cell transplant for severe sickle cell disease, according to a study in the July 1 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. The trial was conducted at the National Institutes of Health's Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, by researchers from NIH's National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The transplant done in the study reversed sickle cell disease in nearly all the patients. Despite having both donor stem-cells and their own cells in their blood, the patients stopped the immunosuppressant medication without experiencing rejection or graft-versus-host disease, in which donor cells attack the recipient. Both are common, serious side effects of transplants. "Typically, stem-cell recipients must take immunosuppressants all their lives," said Matthew Hsieh, M.D., lead author on the paper and staff clinician at NIH. "That the patients who discontinued this … Continue reading
