Stem Cells to The Rescue: Repairing The Hearts

Posted: Published on May 14th, 2014

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- "Grace is what's carried me through this," Minch told Ivanhoe. Ten years ago, at just 49, the choir singer and her husband were told she would need a quadruple bypass. "Now we are at the point where my heart is severely damaged and nothing is really helping," Minch said. Doctors said a heart transplant was her only option, but she'll soon find out if she'll be accepted into a new trial that could use her own stem cells to help repair the once thought irreversible damage, "or even create new blood vessels within areas of the heart that have been damaged," Jon George, MD, Interventional Cardiologist, Temple University School of Medicine, told Ivanhoe. First, stem cells are taken from a patient's bone marrow. Then using a special catheter and 3D mapping tool, the cells are injected directly into the damaged tissue. "We have results from animal data that show blood vessels regrow in the patients that actually get stem cell therapy," Dr. George said. It's a possible answer to Debbie's prayers. Temple University Hospital is currently pre-screening patients for the trial. For more information, call 215-707-5340. ------ See the article here: Stem Cells to The Rescue: … Continue reading

Bone Marrow Transplant or Stem Cell Transplant

Posted: Published on May 12th, 2014

A bone marrow transplant is an amazing process, involving both the miracle of natural processes and medical science. A stem cell transplant is a version of a bone marrow transplant, which I'll explain below. I am a leukemia patient scheduled for a stem cell transplant within the next three weeks, which will replace my bone marrow. I am not a doctor. This is just a general overview of bone marrow transplants based on my research and what I've been told by the nurses and doctors who are treating me. It is written from the perspective of someone who is about to go through one! All your blood cells are made in your bone marrow. When you're born, all your bones have marrow. As you age, your bones stiffen, and only your hips, torso, and cranium have marrow. There are three types of blood cells: Your bone marrow has stem cells. A stem cell (or "pluripotent" cell) is a cell that can become other types of cells. Infant stem cells can become any type of cell in the body. Your bone marrow cells, however, are what are known as hematopoeitic stem cells. They can become only blood cells, but they can … Continue reading

#Shake4Mike: 'I wanted to be his rock in return'

He was still waiting to hear back from a job interview, so I assumed it was about that and I got really excited, she says. I tried to ring a few times, and eventually I got through over quite a patchy line. He said, 'I think Ive got leukaemia. When you hear those words, you know how serious it is. I just told him, 'Im going to get home as quickly as I can. The news that followed was devastating. Mike, 29, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and is currently undergoing intense chemotherapy six times a week at Bristol Royal Infirmary. Such is the severity of his condition that doctors have said he needs a stem-cell transplant to save his life and time is running out. As has been widely reported this week, his family, who live in Somerset, have only until the start of July, when his chemotherapy course ends, to find a suitable donor. Normally a third of people requiring the operation are able to find a sibling match. All of his three brothers have already been tested, but none has been successful. He and his loved ones are now searching the Anthony Nolan stemcell donor register … Continue reading

Mom with rare disease needs treatment in Chicago

Posted: Published on May 10th, 2014

CHANDLER, AZ - Raising two young boys is no easy task for Sabrina Conger. She describes it best as chaotic, but in a good way. Chaos in the morning, laughed Conger. My son doesn't want to wake up in the morning. I gotta drag him out of bed!. Every morning gets tougher for Sabrina. You may not see it on the outside, but on the inside, she's battling systemic scleroderma. It's an autoimmune disease that causes an excessive amount of scar tissue to spread on the inside of her body, affecting her lungs, heart, and blood circulation, leading to ulcers that turn her fingers blue. "Doing simple things like washing dishes, or doing laundry or giving my kids a bath, little things we do like that every day is complicated, said Conger. But she has hope, since shes been approved for a stem cell transplant procedure that would essentially give her a new immune system.. Once they harvest my immature stem cells, then I'll go to five to six days of chemotherapy, that will basically diminish, deplete, any sign of my old immune system, said Conger. Her health insurance will take care of a majority of the procedure, but Sabrina … Continue reading

By Kate WeidawUpdated: Thursday, May 8, 2014, 7:53 amPublished: Thursday, May 8, 2014, 5:36 am AUSTIN (KXAN) In spite of the pending rain, Thursday is an opportunity to help someone fighting cancer beat it. Its being called Swab Fest. and its an effort to get more people to sign up to be stem cell donors on the national registry. The festival was organized to try and find a match for Austinite Brady Oman, 61, who found out he had leukemia at the beginning of the year. He is on his fourth round of chemo and in desperate need of a stem cell transplant, said Susan Wise, Brady Omans partner. Before Oman ended up at MD Anderson battling leukemia he thought in January a bad cold wouldnt go away. Within days he ended up at the hospital thinking it was a heart attack because he couldnt breathe or see well. They said good news you didnt have a heart attack, bad news normal high for white blood cell is 10,000 and yours is 190,000 you have leukemia and it was all in one sentence, said Wise. So far the chemo has saved his life but the clock is ticking and he … Continue reading

Japan institute rejects 'phoney' research scientist appeal

Posted: Published on May 8th, 2014

TOKYO: A respected Japanese institute that sponsored stem cell research hailed as groundbreaking said Thursday the young scientist who wrote the paper should withdraw it, adding it stood by its conclusion that she fabricated data. Haruko Obokata, 30, has insisted her findings were accurate, saying she had managed to create the building-block cells capable of growing into the specialised cells of the brain, liver, heart or kidneys. She had urged her employer to reconsider its findings and exonerate her, but on Thursday the Riken Institute rejected that appeal in a move that may -- in the worst case scenario -- lead to a disciplinary discharge. "The institute has decided not to review the conclusion and informed the person concerned of the decision as of today, while advising (her) to withdraw the paper," it said in a statement. Obokata was feted as a modern-day Marie Curie after unveiling research that showed a simple way to re-programme adult cells to become a kind of stem cell. So-called Stimulus-Triggered Acquisition of Pluripotency (STAP) cells were hailed as a breakthrough that could provide a ready supply of the base material for much-needed transplant tissue, at minimal cost. But within weeks of her paper being … Continue reading

Bride-to-bes quest to find life-saving donor for her fianc

Posted: Published on May 7th, 2014

Diagnosed with leukaemia earlier this year, the 29-year-old needs a stem cell transplant by July. His three brothers do not have the same tissue type so, like 70 per cent of the people who require such treatment, he is waiting on a stranger. His fiance, Kate Robertson, his fiancee, began a campaign group called Shake4mike calling for more people to sign up to the Anthony Nolan charitys donor register. The goal of the campaign, which invites supporters to post a photo of themselves, shaking their face at cancer, was to bring home just how simple it now is both to register and donate. These processes are so much easier now, said Kate, 31. We want to defuse any concerns people have about donating. Its such a marvellous thing to be able to save someones life Sit down, give blood, four or five hours, then youre on your way. She added: Mikes spirit and optimism since day one have been remarkable. Hes just calm, hes not unrealistic that everythings going to be a walk in the park, and just taking one day at a time. A transplant is the last resort for patients with leukaemia and other cancers of the blood, … Continue reading
