Image anomalies cast shadow on acid-bath stem-cell study

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2014

12 hours ago by Bob Yirka Stress-treated lymphocytes expressed pluripotency marker Oct4. Right: STAP cells. Credit: Haruko Obokata (Phys.org) Japanese research center RIKEN has opened an investigation, Nature is reporting, related to reports of anomalies with images published in the same journal as part of a paper on a revolutionary approach to generating stem cells. The paper, titled "Stimulus-triggered fate conversion of somatic cells into pluripotency" described an acid-bath approach the team used to generate the type of stem cells that can grow into any body part. The approach was so much simpler than current methods that it created quite a stir in biology labs across the world. Soon after publication of the paper last month, however, comments began appearing on science blogs noting what appeared to be anomalies or inconsistencies with some of the images that were published along with the paper. Some suggested that one image had been spliced, others that parts of a placenta shown in one image may have been reused in another. As questions about the images used in the paper have grown, it appears that RIKEN, the institute where lead author and researcher Haruko Obokata works, has decided to look a little deeper to … Continue reading

Halifax students help spark interest in stem cell donation

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2014

Right now there are at least 40 Canadians hoping that, somewhere, healthy young black men with their particular genetic markers will sign up to be stem cell donors. To me, its not something you just think about, its something you do. Its pretty simple, says 18-year-old Emmanuel John. The Grade 12 student at Halifax West was volunteering Monday at his high school, helping register potential donors and taking swabs. You get a couple tests and you may be a potential donor, he said. If you are, you can potentially save someones life. The registration and swab event was put on by Canadian Blood Services OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network. The network tries to match donors with people suffering from blood diseases or cancers like sickle-cell anemia and leukemia, said OneMatch co-ordinator Hailu Mulatu. There are 750 Canadians in need of a stem cell transplant, but African-Canadians who make up just under one per cent of registered potential donors are under-represented in the national registry, said Mulatu. Finding a donor and patient match is very difficult. And, because patients and donors must share similar genetic markers, a successful match will only be found among people of the same ethnic origin. … Continue reading

Stem cells from baby's umbilical cord save life of granddad given months to live

Posted: Published on February 13th, 2014

Patients with leukaemia need stem cells to replace damaged ones - the blood in the umbilical cord is so immature the recipient can accept the cells more easily A grandad given just months to live has beaten leukaemia after getting stem cells from two babies umbilical cords. The move was the only option to save David Pyne, 60, after all other treatments failed. He was one of the first to have the procedure. He said of the stem cell transplant: To think two newborns saved an old mans life is just marvellous and its given me more time with my own grandchildren. The dad-of-four was diagnosed with cancer in August 2012 and had chemotherapy and blood transfusions. He desperately needed a stem cell donor but a match could not be found and he was given just 12 to 18 months to live. But then he was offered cells from the umbilical cords of one baby in America and another in France. He said: Things were looking pretty grim until I got the news about the possibility of an umbilical cord stem cell transplant. The team found two separate umbilical cord donors that were a good match. "I felt elated. Go … Continue reading

Students getting swabbed in Carleton Place to save lives

Posted: Published on February 13th, 2014

Forget chocolates and flowers for Valentines Day. There's another way for guys to look good in the eyes of their loved ones: get swabbed. That's what dozens of gallant young students did in Carleton Place in the name of saving lives. "Getting swabbed" is a program run by Canadian Blood Services targeting young men in high school and university potentially to donate stem cells. It came to Carleton Place all because of a young female basketball player fighting for her life. The Carleton Place High School senior girls basketball team has played for years against Kingston player Mackenzie Curran. Last August, the 16-year-old was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a blood disorder. She required a stem cell transplant. 17-year-old twins, Keisha and Teagan Simpson, who play for the Carleton Place team, organized a Get Swabbed event to help raise awareness of the need for donors. "When we heard her situation, says Teagan Simpson, we just wanted to help and we knew this could affect any one of us. Canadian Blood Services is bringing its "Get Swabbed" program into high schools and universities across the country looking specifically for young males between the ages of 17 and 35. They offer the best … Continue reading

Study: Resilience in Parents of Children Undergoing Stem Cell Transplant

Posted: Published on February 12th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise A childs illness can challenge a parents wellbeing. However, a study recently published in the journal Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation shows that in the case of a childs stem cell transplant, parents feel increased distress at the time of the procedure, but eventually recover to normal levels of adjustment. Across all study groups, what we basically showed is that parents are resilient. Overall, parents get better over time, says Jennifer Lindwall, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry at the CU School of Medicine, teaching partner of the University of Colorado Cancer Center. The study measured psychological distress and positive affect in 171 parent/child pairs from time of admission for a childs stem cell transplant until 6 weeks after the procedure, and also measured depression, posttraumatic stress and benefit-finding at the time of admission for the procedure and at 24 weeks after. Results in pediatric patients were previously reported in the journal Pediatrics. The current study reports the results in parents. The aim of the study was to examine an intervention to promote positive adjustment of patients and their parents. In one group, children were given humor and massage therapy, in a … Continue reading

Stem cell transplant at The Christie saved grandad's life after hospital used two babies' umbilical cords

12 Feb 2014 06:00 David Pyne, 60, underwent a remarkable stem cell transplant at The Christie hospital using the babies umbilical cords A grandad whose leukaemia fight left him with around 18 months to live has had his life saved... by two babies. David Pyne, 60, underwent a remarkable stem cell transplant at The Christie hospital using the babies umbilical cords. He is among the first patients at the hospital to undergo the transplant after all other treatments were exhausted. David said: I was truly amazed when my doctor at The Christie said we could use this option. To think that two newborns saved an old mans life is just marvellous and its given me more time with my own grandchildren. Dad-of-four and grandfather-of-seven David, from Baguley, Wythenshawe, was diagnosed with leukaemia following routine blood tests in August 2012. He began chemotherapy and blood transfusions. In 2012, a search for a stem cell donor was launched, but no members of his family proved a match and no other donors could be found. It left David with a life expectancy of around 12 to 18 months. But in September, David underwent the transplant using stem cells from the umbilical cords of … Continue reading
