Stem cell transplant repairs damaged gut in mouse model of inflammatory bowel disease

Posted: Published on October 18th, 2013

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 17-Oct-2013 Contact: Jen Middleton j.middleton@wellcome.ac.uk 44-207-611-7262 Wellcome Trust A source of gut stem cells that can repair a type of inflammatory bowel disease when transplanted into mice has been identified by researchers at the Wellcome Trust-Medical Research Council Cambridge Stem Cell Institute at the University of Cambridge and at BRIC, the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The findings pave the way for patient-specific regenerative therapies for inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis. All tissues in our body contain specialised stem cells, which are responsible for the lifelong maintenance of the individual tissue and organ. Stem cells found in adults are restricted to their tissue of origin, for example, stem cells found in the gut will be able to contribute to the replenishment of the gut whereas stem cells in the skin will only contribute to maintenance of the skin. The team first looked at developing intestinal tissue in a mouse embryo and found a population of stem cells that were quite different to the adult stem cells that have been described in the gut. The cells were very actively dividing and could be grown in the laboratory over a long period without becoming specialised into the adult … Continue reading

Presque Isle infant needs stem cell transplant to beat life-threatening illness

Posted: Published on October 13th, 2013

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine Brylee Ann-Marie Gagnon, born Aug. 8 at The Aroostook Medical Center to Shandi Page and Chad Gagnon of Presque Isle, was considered a healthy child at birth, weighing 8 pounds, 13 ounces. But in the few short weeks afterward, Brylees family discovered she suffers from a life-threatening illness. She appeared to be the picture of health. Doctors had no concerns with her and after a one-day stay in the hospital, baby and Mom were discharged and sent home, said Debby Page, Brylees maternal grandmother. Like some newborns, Brylee had a few problems with gas and what seemed to be cramping during her first week at home, said her grandmother. She was brought in to see the doctor and her formula was changed. But that did not seem to improve things. Then suddenly when she was 10 days old, she spiked a fever of 104 degrees. She was rushed to TAMC where they decided to LifeFlight her out to Bangor immediately, said Page. Page said the family later found out that doctors did not expect Brylee to survive the trip, but against all odds she did. Brylee spent nearly a week at a neonatal intensive care unit in … Continue reading

A local teen battling cancer has shared some great news. Lorelei Decker who has been battling refractory Hodgkin's lymphoma is now in remission. Decker, a Putnam City North High School graduate, was granted a wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation last year. She got to coach the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team for a day. Decker had a stem cell transplant earlier this year and was scheduled to stay at M.D. Anderson for 100 days. However, doctors discharged her almost one month early so she could be at home to welcome her brother back from Afghanistan. She will continue going to Houston once a week for check-ups, but she tells KOCO 5's Rachel Calderon that she will enroll at Oklahoma State University in January and is anticipating getting married in the future. Stay with KOCO 5 to hear from Decker later this week. Read more: Lorelei Decker shares good news following stem cell transplant … Continue reading

Girl, 10, shows no sign of sickle cell after stem cell transplant in St. Louis

Posted: Published on September 1st, 2013

After spending three months undergoing and recovering from a risky stem cell transplant, 10-year-old Caitlyn Hill left St. Louis Childrens Hospital last week without any signs of her sickle cell disease. Caitlyn is only the third person to receive a cord blood transplant from an unrelated donor to treat sickle cell as part of a nationwide study involving Washington University School of Medicine, where researchers are leading the way in finding easier and safer ways to treat non-cancerous diseases with bone marrow and stem cell transplants. For Caitlyns parents, who for months lived with the fear their young daughter could suffer a stroke, the idea that she could no longer suffer symptoms from the inherited blood disorder hasnt sunk in even after seeing Caitlyns red blood cell counts at levels they had never seen. Its hard to see beyond to think, Oh my gosh, maybe shell never have sickle cell in her life. We havent totally grasped that, said Lena Hill, 38, of Iowa City, Iowa. We feel really blessed we had Dr. Shenoy to cure our child of the disease. Dr. Shalini Shenoy is the director of the hospitals Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant Program and a pioneer in developing … Continue reading
