Thousands set to benefit from access to treatment for inflammatory bowel disease

Photo: Jamila Toderas Thousands of sufferers with a type of chronic and incurable inflammatory bowel disease could soon have affordable access a life-altering treatment that previously cost up to $20,000 a year. Infliximab has been made available on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and can be used to treat people with moderate to severe ulcerative colitis, including children aged six to 17. Professor Paul Pavli, a gastroenterologist at Canberra Hospital and ANU medical school, said ulcerative colitis could be a debilitating condition for sufferers. It is estimated more than 30,000 people in Australia have the disease. Advertisement The condition is characterised by chronic inflammation of the lining of the large intestine with symptoms including abdominal pain, frequent bloody stools and high sense of urgency, cramps, weight loss and fatigue. Professor Pavli said the causes of ulcerative colitis were not known but it was becoming more common. He said infliximab was a "life-transforming" treatment for people whose condition had not responded to conventional therapy, including other medication, steroids and immuno-suppressive drugs. United star Darren Fletcher drops in to see sick youngsters with cheque for 7,000

United star Darren Fletcher provided some festive cheer for poorly children after dropping in with a cheque for 7,000. The Reds midfielder visited Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital to hand over the cash to patients on its Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) day case unit. The money will fund the purchase of entertainment and educational equipment to amuse and help with education of the children during their sometimes prolonged hospital visits. Darrens visit to the Childrens Hospital represents the successful outcome of the 2014 United for Colitis charity fundraising gala dinner held earlier in the year at Uniteds Old Trafford stadium. The Scottish star has been lucky enough to beat ulcerative colitis and is now fully recovered, but he said he is keen to help others with these debilitating, often hidden, bowel conditions. The United for Colitis event saw Darren sharing his story with ex-England rugby union captain Lewis Moody, another top sportsman with ulcerative colitis. United for Colitis is a new charity that raises funds for the patient charity, Crohns and Colitis UK. Dr. Larry Good (State University of New York, Stonybrook, NY) presented a retrospective case study on the use of the prescription medical food, EnteraGam (serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin/protein isolate, SBI) to manage symptoms in three patient with ulcerative colitis (UC). In each of the cases, the patients had experienced episodes of chronic loose and frequent stools, along with a variety of other symptoms, and had been treated for their ulcerative colitis with conventional therapy but failed to respond adequately. The addition of SBI at 5 g/day resulted in a significant and/or complete management of symptoms associated with their ulcerative colitis, which included significant reductions in bowel movements, urgency, and nocturnal episodes as well as elimination of blood and mucus in stools. Dr. Larry Good (State University of New York, Stoneybrook, NY) also presented results from a second case study on four patients with Crohn's disease and their response to SBI therapy.
