Posted: Published on November 1st, 2012

UPDATED 5:42 p.m. SYDNEY The head of a multimillion-dollar drug company will fight a $399.91 ticket for failing to drive in a careful and prudent manner in connection with the September death of a motorcyclist in Sydney. Douglas Parker Rudderham, CEO and president of Professional Pharmacy Wholesale Service Inc., as well as the owner of Frank Magazine, said Wednesday the death of John (Jack) MacLeod MacDonald on Sept. 14 was a tragedy. It was a tragedy and thats all I can say, said Rudderham. He referred further questions to his Halifax-based lawyer, Joel Pink. Pink confirmed he is awaiting disclosure of evidence in the case and that Rudderham would plead not guilty to the charge. Cape Breton Regional Police issued the summary offence ticket Oct. 26, under the Motor Vehicle Act. MacDonald, 67, died at the scene after his motorcycle was hit from behind by a black Cadillac Escalade, which is registered to Rudderhams pharmaceutical company. The victim was making a right-hand turn from Grand Lake Road to a Kytes Hill Road subdivision where he lived. Ironically, MacDonald was one of a group of residents who had lobbied Cape Breton Regional Municipality to address perceived problems with that portion of … Continue reading

Sydney businessman fights fatal crash ticket

Posted: Published on November 1st, 2012

The lawyer for Parker Rudderham, a prominent businessman in Sydney, says his client will fight a ticket he was given after a traffic accident that killed a motorcyclist last month. Joel Pink, Rudderham's lawyer, said he will plead not guilty to a charge of failing to operate a motor vehicle in a careful and prudent manner. The charge carries a fine of $399.91 and six demerit points. Pink said he's waiting for disclosure of police evidence before proceeding. John MacLeod MacDonald, 67, died last month when his motorcycle was struck from behind by a sport utility vehicle. Rudderham was driving the SUV, say Cape Breton Regional Police. Stan MacDonald, John MacDonald's brother, said he's upset Rudderham was only issued a ticket. The Cape Breton Regional Police defended its decision. "As part of the investigation, police explored all aspects that could include, or did include environmental conditions, road conditions, mechanical inspections on both vehicles, conducted interviews and statements from various witnesses, and looked at basically all avenues of why, or reasons why, Mr. Rudderham did not see the motorcycle slowing down in front of him," said Desiree Vassallo, a spokeswoman for the Cape Breton Regional Police. Vassallo said police did a … Continue reading

MONTREAL, Oct. 30, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Professional Pharmacy Wholesale Services Ltd. (PPWS), a Montral company specializing in wholesaling diagnostic material, mainly for diabetes, pleaded guilty to a count of tax evasion today before the Court of Quebec. It was fined $325,000, which represents 150% of the federal tax it tried to evade. In addition to this fine, PPWS will have to pay the full amount of tax owing, plus related interest and any administrative penalties that apply. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) investigation revealed that PPWS voluntarily contravened the Income Tax Act by deducting a total of $1,050,680 in false expenses to lower its taxable income and avoid paying a total of $214,266 in taxes for the 2006, 2007, and 2009 tax years. PPWS, whose sole administrator and principal shareholder is Douglas Parker Rudderham, used false invoices for studies in the name of four suppliers. The names of three of them, one former lawyer from Nova Scotia and two companies from China, were used without their knowledge, while a fourth name was that of another company incorporated by Mr. Rudderham. The above information was obtained from the court records. Canadians have to be confident that the administration of the … Continue reading
