Wal-Mart's health care question

Posted: Published on January 22nd, 2013

Folks at Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) can't seem to make up their minds about health care. Just last week, there was talk the company might offer health insurance coverage to small businesses, a group that has trouble buying coverage at reasonable rates. Sounds like the company might be thinking about organizing a health-care exchange targeting small businesses. Maybe not. A company spokeswoman told Bloomberg BusinessWeek the company was evaluating the idea. But, she added, "Wal-Mart does not currently have plans for a private health insurance exchange." Okay. Next, the Orlando Business Journal's Abraham Aboraya, who started all this speculation, quoted a Wal-Mart executive as saying it will open primary care clinics in five to seven years. But, no, maybe not. Later, the company told Aboraya that there was no big plan for primary care. So it's all very confusing. The larger trend is, however, that small-business health insurance exchanges are starting to get organized. It may be that a Wal-Mart or a Costco Wholesale (COST) may be involved, as opposed to exchanges set up by states, because they have the expertise on negotiating plans covering many thousands of people, particularly Costco. At the same time, big retail chains, like Wal-Mart, Costco … Continue reading

Bottles from the affected lots may contain tablets that have a higher dosage of acetaminophen, and as a result, it is possible that consumers could take more than the intended acetaminophen dose. A shot in the dark? Some say flu vaccine hard to find

Posted: Published on January 17th, 2013

Some parts of the country are experiencing spot shortages of flu vaccine because of increased demand in a flu season that started earlier and is more severe than previous years. In Las Vegas, Celeste Tom tried six times before she found a flu shot for her boyfriend. "I'd been bugging him to get a flu shot, but he kept putting it off," said Tom, 55. The Smith's Food and Drug Center where she got her shot was out. Her partner called his doctor's office, but they were out, too. Next she tried a Walgreens and then a CVS pharmacy; no vaccine. She called another Smith's, but it would administer vaccine only to people over 65. On Monday, she found a Walgreens that had 10 doses left. "I called back when he got off work at 1 p.m. to make sure they still had some, and he finally went in." "The bottom line is there's vaccine out there," said Tom Skinner, a spokesman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "There may be places where there are spot shortages, but there should be a little bit more coming, so people may have to check around for it." It took Pam … Continue reading

What Japan needs to do

Posted: Published on January 14th, 2013

Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013 With its economy spluttering, large parts of its northeastern region still devastated by the effects of the mammoth Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 and releases of radioactive materials that followed its population shrinking and aging at unprecedented rates and its citizens despairing of dysfunctional politics, Japan's entry into a new Year of the Snake appears unlikely to yield much of the steady progress that these years traditionally herald. Indeed, the country's myriad problems including fundamental divisions over such crucial issues as energy, defense and trade policies can appear so deep-seated as to make it difficult to know even how to begin to set things right. In an effort to cast some light into this darkness, The Japan Times has enlisted a range of especially talented individuals to respond to a simple question: What are the three most important things that Japan must do in 2013? Comprising business people, artists, academics and politicians, our 10 respondents offer a stimulating and diverse array of suggestions to help this country reset its course for the better before 2014's Year of the Horse gallops in with all its supposed symbolism of nobility, class, speed and perseverance ... Hospitals restrict visitation because of flu

Posted: Published on January 13th, 2013

A deluge of people seeking the influenza vaccine has strained the resources of Capital Region pharmacies and doctors' offices as a growing national flu outbreak reached epidemic levels. The outbreak has also prompted local hospitals to restrict visitors, an emergency protocol aimed at slowing the spread of the virus. Mirroring a wave of illness throughout 47 states, data show flu has been widespread throughout New York for seven weeks. The number of patients admitted to hospitals in the state with confirmed cases of influenza spiked 55 percent last week, and one child died, according to the state Department of Health. The high number of flu cases, coupled with an early start to the flu season, sent more people than usual to pharmacies and doctors' offices to be vaccinated. Some locations ran low, while others stockpiled doses in anticipation of supplies drying up in the near future. The federal Centers for Disease Control said on its website that the vaccine may be difficult to find. Price Chopper, which offers vaccines at in-store pharmacies, has nearly tripled the number of vaccines it doles out daily. The company placed an order for 600 doses of the vaccine for its 45 New York state … Continue reading
