Season five of Chicago Med picks up just seconds after the finale with Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) rushing into the hospital with Natalie (Torrey DeVito) in his arms after the two were T-boned in what it turns out was not a car accident, but a definite attempt on Wills life.

Natalie is unconscious with traumatic brain injury and fighting for her life, and Will has serious injuries, too, but is ignoring them while he waits to find out her fate.

But Will has a lot of guilt from this whole thing because he was actually the cause of the crash. It wasnt an accident.Tim Burke (Adam Petchel), son of mobster Ray Burke (Dennis Cockrum),drove a car straight into them in retalitaion for Will testifying against his father. Will has a lot of guilt because he has brought misery into Natalies life, and then he also needs to contend with Phillip (Ian Harding), who tells everyone he is Natalies fianc, and Will, at first, decides that that must be what Natalie got in his car to tell him in the first place.

Natalie will continue to have memory loss and also deal with emotional confusion, executive producer Diane Frolov tells Parade.com in this exclusive interview. She feels like she must have feelings for Phillip, but she doesnt have them, but feels that that can be caused by this trauma. Itll also impact her being a doctor. Even people around her might wonder if shes making good decisions because of that injury, and then, of course, it continues the Will/Natalie story with Will doubting the engagement, doubting that that was what she was coming to tell him.

It is no secret that Connor (Colin Donnell) and Ava (Norma Kuhling) are checking out of Chicago Med, but Colin, for sure, returns for the first episode of season five to wrap up the storyline and make an exit that should be satisfying to fans.

The story begins when an investigation is launched following the suspicious death of the elder Cornelius Rhodes (D.W. Moffett), Dr. Rhodes father. Connor is suspicious that Ava was responsible for injecting his father with the insulin that killed him, an allegation that she hotly denied in the season four finale. The producers are keeping this story very much under wraps, only saying, The mystery of the death of Connors father will be resolved.

Here is more of what to look forward to in season five:

Does Phillip Davis have some sort of mental disorder? It is very suspicious that he is telling everyone he is engaged to Natalie.

Diane Frolov: A little bit. I think he does.

Executive Producer Andy Schneider: Yeah, I think so.

Diane Frolov: Hes a romantic.

Andy Schneider: Hes a fantasist.

Diane Frolov: He will prove to be the perfect companion for her. Hell watch her son Owen and take care of the house. Hes the guy you might really consider marrying.

Yaya DaCosta on How Her Role in Bolden is 180 Degrees Different Than That on Chicago Med

The on-again, off-again couple appear to be on again when season five begins, and April (Yaya DaCosta) suspects that she might be pregnant with Ethans (Brian Tee) baby.So are they together or not?

Diane Frolov: Theyll be in a good place as were leaving the first episode, but the baby question and the commitment to one another question will play out in the season. Its not over.

Theres a new doctor in the ED. Dominic Rains is joining the cast as Dr. Marcel. Whats the scoop?

Diane Frolov: Hes a fun guy. Hes an easygoing guy. Hes irreverent. He will say what he thinks. He isnt tied up in all these dramas. Hes watching them. Hes new. He was on the night shift, so he knows the people, but doesnt know all the drama.

Andy Schneider: He just brings a very different energy into the ED, but it helps us focus back on the ED because hes a trauma surgeon. He will work in the hybrid room, but its not the issue like with Connor being a CT surgeon that he was so often out of the ED.

Maggie has been diagnosed with cancer. Is that going to play out all season or be resolved quickly?

Diane Frolov: Well follow her through her treatments, what happens at them, and her dealing with whether or not to let people in on it. Thats a conflict and shell have a relationship with Cece [Dr. Charles wife played by Paula Newsome], who has gone through the same sort of thing.

We have two sick women this season, Maggie and CeCe. Could we have another death?

Diane Frolov: Theyre on different trajectories. But, yes.

Andy Schneider: I can almost guarantee it.

Who else will be recurring this season?

Andy Schneider: Aprils brother Noah (Roland Buck III) will recur this season.

Diane Frolov: And were bringing Elsa back.

Andy Schneider: Elsa Curry, the medic, Molly Bernards character. Shell recur. Dr. Latham (Ato Essandoh) will be back. Gwen (Heather Headley) will be back.

With Cece sick, what is that going to do for Olivers character?

Diane Frolov: At the moment, and for quite a while, Dr. Charles (Oliver Platt) is having a happy marriage, and his wife is in good spirits, and so were going to see, for a little while, him enjoying being back with his wife. Itll impact him in the way that she inspires him.

Andy Schneider: It will impact his treatment of patients.

Is there an overall theme or something that you hope to accomplish this season?

Diane Frolov: Well, we started the season thinking that all these people will have these big, life-altering events that we would play out through the season, and thats what were doing.

Season five of Chicago Med premieres Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
