COBLESKILL - A Cobleskill 15-year-old on Wednesday became the first child whose wish --a new above-ground pool --could be fulfilled by Make-A-Wish Northeast New York since the pandemic began, the organization said.

Volunteers got Cheyenne and her family away from home Wednesday for a day of activities at Adirondack Animal Land, lunch and shopping.

While they were away, workers assembled the pool she had wished for. Upon their return, Cheyenne was greeted by the socially-distanced family, a DJ and confetti cannons, the organization said.

"I knew it!" Make-A-Wish quoted her as saying as she realized what was happening.

Make-A-Wish works to grant wishes for children battling critical illness. Cheyenne has a nervous system disorder and cerebral palsy and her pool will provide a family activity, as well as therapy, her family said.

Many of the Make-A-Wish wishes, though, involve travel, making granting those wishes impossible for the time being, the organization said. But other wishes, like Cheyenne's, remain possible.

"While many of our wishes are on hold, we have never stopped working to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses," Make-A-Wish Northeast New York CEO William C. Trigg, III, said in a news release."We are delighted to grant Cheyenne's wish, and look forward to the day we can grant the wishes of all the children we serve in our 15-county chapter."
