Colorado wide receiver Nelson Spruce says the chemistry he has with quarterback Sefo Liufau has been essential to the record-breaking numbers they're producing this season and he felt a connection with Liufau right from the start.

Liufau took over as Colorado's quarterback in the first quarter of a loss at Arizona State in 2013. He immediately led the Buffs on an 80-yard scoring drive in which he completed his first career pass to Spruce and finished the drive off with his first career touchdown pass to Spruce. He completed another pass to Spruce in the middle of the drive.

"The offense we play in is great, especially for a receiver, but I think the chemistry aspect is definitely there just because at this time last year, Sefo only had one or two games under his belt," Spruce said Tuesday. "We've had this whole offseason and whole camp to really get on the same page and these games we've been having I feel like that connection has grown even stronger."

The Buffs have produced numerous drives this season that are reminiscent of that first drive of Liufau's career. The sophomore quarterback spreads the ball around to others, but often relies on Spruce and defenses, to this point anyway, seem incapable of stopping them consistently.

Both quarterback and receiver participated in the program's weekly press luncheon Tuesday and they had a little fun patting each other on the back.

"Nelson is a really good receiver," Liufau said. "He's got good hands, good speed, especially good routes, which I think sets him a part from many other receivers. I don't want to blow his head too big, but he's a good receiver. We'll just leave it at that."

"Keep going," Spruce said from the back of the room.

Later, when Spruce sat down in front of the microphone just after Liufau had been asked whether he thought other quarterbacks are envious that he has Spruce to throw to, a wise cracking reporter started Spruce's interview wondering if he believed other receivers are envious that he has Liufau throwing him the ball.

"It's every receiver's dream to have a quarterback that can put the ball on you in any situation," Spruce said. "Even if I don't get the most separation on my route, Sefo is always putting it in a place where at least I have a chance. That's all you can ask for as a receiver."
