MANILA, Philippines - The head of the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) has filed a complaint against a group of foreign medical practitioners and a Filipino agent over his botched stem cell therapy.
Antonio Villar has filed a formal complaint with the Anti-Fraud Division of the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group against a German doctor, a Thai doctor, a Thai nurse, and a Filipino agent who facilitated the treatment at a five-star hotel in Mandaluyong.
"Buti na-check up kaagad na lumalaki na nang husto ang aking prostate. Buti naagapan, kung hindi yun kanser na," he said.
"Hinala ko, maaaring tubig o dextrose lang iniject sa kanya," said Dr. Leo Olarte, president of the Philippine Medical Association.
Police Chief Inspector Nio Briones of the CIDG's Anti-Fraud Division wants more victims to come out.
"Sna marami pa ang lumutang na biktima. Bibigyan po natin sila ng tulong para matigil na ito," he said.
Police said the German doctor is no longer in the Philippines, but his Filipino wife who is still in the country could be included in the complaint.
The Philippine Medical Association is also studying whether the hotel where the procedure was conducted should also be included.
"Sana eh obserbahang maiigi itong mga doktor na nanggagaling sa Germany. Dahil ang pasok niyan sandali lang kinabukasan, umaalis din kaagad. May mga dala-dala silang styropor na malilit na nandun daw yung mga stem cell ng mga lamb," Villar said.
Under the health department's regulations, only stem cells harvested from the patients themselves can be used in stem cell procedures in the country.
