The most senior officer of Devon and Cornwall Police has revealed he recently could be found standing in the middle of a road in Exeter directing traffic in his Lycra running gear.

Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer tweeted on Saturday (April 25) about how while out on his regular running route, he came across a scene of what he first thought was a collision between a female cyclist and a car.

However, he soon realised that the people crowding round were not mere spectators, but locals who had raced to her aid.

He told PlymouthLive: "I'd gone round what I would call my tour of Exeter on my Nike run.

"There was a car pulled over and I thought at first it had hit the cyclist, but it was actually shielding the cyclist, which I thought was very brave.

"I think she had come over the top of her handlebars and was unconscious and I think this group, some of them knew her but not all of them, and they've come out and effectively thought 'to hell with coronavirus and social distancing, we've got to help her', because she could have had a serious brain injury.

"I offered my first aid help but the main chap said it was okay and he clearly had a medical background and so I directed traffic in Lycra, which is certainly not a sight to see."

Paramedics from South Western Ambulance Service soon arrived, along with Devon Air Ambulance's car, and the woman - who by now had regained consciousness - was soon taken away to hospital for further treatment.

Chief Constable Sawyer said: "I did the tweet afterwards because I wanted to say thank you to all of them because it was a great example of human spirit, of the public and the emergency services working together to help someone. "

The Devon Air Ambulance Twitter account later replied to the officer's tweet, saying: "Thank you Shaun Sawyer. Great to have our critical care care and DAATCL crew responding to help another patient in need of special care and attention alongside [the ambulance service]."
