ALOR SETAR, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- A disabled (OKU) woman who suffered a stroke 14 months ago is hoping some sympathisers will come forward to help pay her medical bills.

Halejah Mat, 63, who is afflicted with impairment of the hands and feet from childhood, also suffers from kidney disease, high blood pressure and gastritis.

The mother of two said after the stroke which occurred during Ramadan last year, her husband had sought assistance from the Social Welfare Department (JKM) twice but was rejected both times.

"Before the stroke, I used to do sewing eventhough my hands were handicapped. I even prepared and sold my own pickled fish. But after the stroke I'm unable to do anything. I feel depressed just sitting and staring into space," she told reporters at her home in Taman Desa Kamela, in Alor Setar.

Her husband, Basir Md Nor, 60, said he earned only RM80 for a full day doing home repair jobs or RM40 if he worked half day, which was insufficient for her medications, milk, diapers and other needs.

"We are very grateful to our neighbours who help send us to hospital for my wife's therapy sessions as I don't have a car," he added.

Meanwhile, Halejah said she would be grateful for any help to cover her high medical costs.
