JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

A Bessemer man who is already in prison is facing new charges after DNA evidence linked him to the scene of a 2011 attempted murder and burglary case in McCalla.

The suspect, 22-year-old Curtis Dewayne Inghram, is currently serving time for a first degree assault charge in an unrelated case.

In August 2014, detectives learned that Inghram matched the DNA profile of one of two suspects who allegedly broke into a home in McCalla and exchanged gunfire with the victims in 2011.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says the burglary happened on March 31, 2011 between 11:30 p.m. and 11:45 p.m.

On that evening, the 66-year-old homeowner and his 58-year-old wife were woken up by the burglary alarm going off at their home in the 1000 block of Coleman Drive.

The man grabbed a handgun and he and his wife went to turn off the alarm in the kitchen when they ran into two men dressed in all black.

One of the suspects had a rifle and exchanged shots with the man. Both of the intruders then ran away through a broken window and the victims called 911.

The man was hit by a bullet fragment, treated at the hospital for his injury and released.

When detectives investigated the crime, they discovered blood evidence near a broken window in the sunroom, which is how they believe the suspects got inside the house.
