A mysterious, unprovoked attack on an elderly man that left him covered in so much blood he was unrecognisable has landed in court after DNA evidence linked a suspect to the scene more than one year later.

The 65-year-old man was fixing a car in the driveway of his Edensor Park home, in Sydney's west, on April 9, 2013 when he was violently attacked by a stranger wielding a hunting knife, Parramatta Bail Court heard.

Documents tendered to court reveal the knife was a 'replica Rambo' blade 40 centimetres in length.

The victim retreated to his garage and tried to fight off his alleged attacker Alexander Cosic with some success, allegedly leaving DNA behind.

It's alleged Mr Cosic tore a gold chain from the victim's neck then escaped in a car parked nearby.

He was charged with robbery armed with an offensive weapon causing wounding at 6pm Friday night, nearly 15 months after the incident.

In refusing bail to the accused, Magistrate Christopher McRobert repeatedly emphasised the seriousness of the alleged offence.

"This is a savage, unprovoked attack on a 65-year-old man in his own home," he said.

"It involved a sustained period of attack on an elderly man whilst armed with a knife, and resulted in significant injuries.
