In order to bridge the gap between epilepsy cares provided in India and abroad, an Indo-US collaborative effort is taking place which is likely to help millions of patients in India. Ten neurologists from the country will be trained for a period between one and three months on epilepsy treatment.
The initiative was unveiled at National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Nimhans) on Sunday as part of a Colloquium on Drug Resistant Epilepsy.
The idea is the brainchild of Nimhans Director P Sathischandra, jointly with the Association of American Epileptologists of Indian origin and the Indian Epilepsy Association (Bangalore Chapter).
The young neurologists will be trained by eminent neurosurgeons in America on the latest advancement in the treatment of epilepsy. They will come back and apply their learning to the patients. We have also been planning service projects like free epilepsy clinics in rural areas where neurosurgeons from the USA will come and conduct camps, Dr Sanjay P Singh of the American Epileptologists of Indian Origin said.
India has about 1,000 neurosurgeons. It is important for them to be well equipped with the latest treatment. There is a growing need in India to control the disease. Doctors will be shortlisted under my guidance and will be sent for training after they have fulfilled the set guidelines. We are looking for young neurologists for training and providing right equipments to the next generation of epilepsy specialists, Dr Sathischandra said.
