The driver of a car involved in the death of a pedestrian yesterday in Sydney's north has been arrested and charged with firearm, drug and property offences.

Police say that an elderly pedestrian was killed after being hit by a vehicle on Willoughby Road, Willoughby.

They say witnesses have told police a utility travelling north crossed a number of lanes of traffic before leaving the roadway.

The vehicle hit a bin and street sign, before hitting a 74-year-old man.

He suffered serious injuries and died at the scene.

After the accident, the 31-year-old driver of the utility was detained by police for mandatory blood and urine testing.

His mobile phone was also seized for examination.

'During the course of their inquiries, crash investigators became aware of a possible cache of firearms, weapons and cash at the 31-year-old's Coogee apartment,' police said in a statement.

'This information was referred to the State Crime Command's Firearms and Organised Crime Squad, who applied for and executed a search warrant at a property on Arden Street, Coogee.

'Inside the apartment, police found and seized firearms, ammunition, weapons, illicit drugs, steroids, approximately 200 pairs of brand new sports shoes, and protected wildlife, including snakes and four albino red-eared turtles.
